Excellent, excellent trailer. DiCaprio, De Niro and Gladstone all look amazing.

Sounds like Gladstone is running lead after all.

Sounds like Gladstone is running lead after all. May she have greater fortune than Michelle Williams.

I definitely don't think this is a Michelle Williams situation. Gladstone is borderline according to everyone I know who's seen it, and could reasonably run supporting if she wished... but again, it's the optics of the situation. This is a movie about the Osage people and the horrors wrought upon them. And Lily Gladstone is the face of that. And to have her be docked to supporting a white A-lister whom she wouldn't even be competing against, well, that doesn't really sit right. Even if she is potentially more win-competitive in Supporting Actress (which I don't really think she is; I think she's as much of a shot at winning regardless of which category she's in).

Green Book proves that the Academy cares a lot less about "optics" than twitter thinks they should. And take from that film. Ali who was docked in supporting and walked to a second win without any issue, where even Mortensen had gone supporting, probably would've been a potentially insurmountable challenge for him to win a lead there. And I'll disagree on supporting being just as hard/easy, sweeps there can be extremely easy when one becomes "the" choice. Actress there often is a career aspect to the win in some way, semi-unknowns can win, but it's tougher than in supporting.

Actress there often is a career aspect to the win in some way, semi-unknowns can win, but it's tougher than in supporting. I'm not talking about the optics for the Academy. I'm talking about the optics for Apple TV+ and for Martin Scorsese, who have both been (pardon the pun) banging the drum about revamping the story from the original text to minimize the white saviour narrative and to augment the focus on the Osage. It'd be a bit disingenuous to tout the importance of getting the First Nations perspective, only to take the primary First Nations character who isn't competing against any of her co-stars for focus to be docked to supporting. That's just a bad look. Gladstone probably knows that her chances are likely greater in Supporting Actress, but this is about more than just the award itself. This is about making a statement about Native actors and their voices, and being able to show that they have equal footing and are capable of headlining a movie and getting garlanded for it. And the thing is: she can win off that narrative in Best Actress.

There is always the scenario though where the academy feels satisfied enough to just give her the first NOMINATION ever for a American Indigenous performer in the category and then calls it a day.

I mean, I would argue it was a factor in last year's Best Actress win as well, because Yeoh's campaign emphasized that an (openly) Asian actress had never been nominated before. She just happened to have the most beloved film on her side, and it certainly helped tip the scales at the last moment against Blanchett (who was a two-time winner who was openly not giving a shit about awards). I think shattering the glass ceiling in the first place by getting the leading nomination is the goal here. If Gladstone manages to parlay that into a win, that's just gravy. But looking at the campaign, the goal is the leading nomination. But I think (like Yeoh before her) the narrative and the strength of the movie can carry her the rest of the way, considering her likeliest biggest rival for the award already has an Oscar.

That gave Yeoh a edge (given how well EEAO did overall she probably didn't need it), but Yeoh had a MUCH bigger career than Gladstone has up till this point.

Yeah, but again, the fact that Hollywood hasn't given First Nations performers the proper opportunities to be able to have the sort of career one would reasonably expect of a Best Actress winner is the whole point.

She can also play the 'fifty (one) years ago you booed Sacheen Littlefeather, now you will acknowledge me' card.
