I just googled him, I would cast michael shannon. I wouldn't mind that either. Love him and he would great also. But again, I have to agree with Mattsby, Sean Penn would be ideal because he's rough-edged enough to fit the character described in the book. Penn would be good, but I'd still like to see DiCaprio and DeNiro in a Scorsese film together. They can age the character a bit and make it work. But I agree. DiCaprio's role isn't baity. While he's at the center of the story, there doesn't appear to be much to the character.

One thing DiCaprio's role does have going for it is that he's very admirable and likable, and he gets to age. Ernest Burkhart would be an interesting role to cast too.

VarietyNo mention of De Niro, rumored for major William Hale role. Personally I'd cast Penn... As for Devil in the White City, who knows, but it's kinda upsetting that at the very earliest we'll have to wait until 2021.

As for Devil in the White City, I still hope Fincher does it. It's going to be hard to adapt though. 20% is about Holmes.

Who do you think as he playing? I guess he is referring to William Hale, the villain of the story, so to speak.

I'm very glad De Niro still seems to be part of this. Scorsese is getting older, he is getting older, so there aren't going to be many more opportunities to unite them with DiCaprio on a project.
And I think DiCaprio really wants that collaboration with De Niro, directed by Scorsese. I guess the same can be said about his upcoming pairing with Pacino.
I personally would like to see De Niro as Hale, even if the role doesn't seem like a slam dunk in terms casting, you know, east coast De Niro, at least on paper. But if you pair those two in a Scorsese picture, they have to be the main (male) protagonists, right? Otherwise, what's the point? But who knows from what angle Eric Roth has tackled the story.
(BTW, look out for Alessandro Nivola for something in this, maybe the husband of Mollie Burkhart? I think he entered the orbit of De Niro. But I'm just guessing.)
And it's true, I also can't see 75 year old De Niro on a horse, but that's a minor problem to deal with, I think.
De Niro gave an interview a couple of days ago (Big Issue North). Here's an excerpt:
He says he never gives up looking for great roles and is actually quite excited about something he has on the horizon although he won’t say what it is. “There is one. I don’t want to talk about it because usually when I talk about these things, they don’t happen. It’s happened three or four times – you talk it away, then somehow they don’t materialise. I’m superstitious. This time I don’t want to say anything. There are so many things you have to do to get it done. I don’t want to jinx it. It’s not a role I’ve wanted, or I’ve been waiting to play. Once I discovered this character, a historical character, I knew this is something I wanted to commit to and get in to.”
I wondered what project/role he was referring to.
Something with David O. Russell maybe, who these days seems to be at every event De Niro shows up? (I think they have become pretty close in recent years. If he adores De Niro so much, why not give him a true leading role, not just the third biggest supporting part from left?!)
Russell was working on a biopic of Buddy Cianci, the late Prince of Providence, some time ago, with De Niro also part of it, producing or something. Maybe they would tackle that story, I thought, just fictionalizing it (Cianci was only two years older than De Niro).
Or he was referring to that Ferrari project that may be something real or not (last thing I read was that Christopher Wilkinson of Nixon fame was writing it, with De Niro's (and Pacino's) go-to guy these days Barry Levinson directing for HBO, I think.)
Now, after his remarks in Marrakesh, he was probably referring to this project. Maybe his hatred for the Big Orange One inspires him to dig deep into the heart of american greed and, you know, how the west was won.

He's not the perfect fit, I've said before I'd go with Penn (who's very friendly with Leo so I'm surprised they didn't but anyway). But he could work. I mean his best perf in many years was Wizard of Lies and you can take some of that for the role - an absence of humility/honesty, a contained moral compass, subtle rancor. There's a lot in the book, it could've worked as a miniseries. They should cut from the back-half, I'd say. Lotta routine court scenes aren't necessary. Ideally they'll have it as a three-hander, btwn Mollie Burkhart the heart of the story, Hale dealing in his "king" status, and (I believe Leo's role) Tom White /his team and their investigation.

So you did read the book, right? I do have to pick it up too. But that's what I am thinking about Brandt's Sheeran/Hoffa bestseller for years, a project I'm obsessed with, but never followed through. You are right about Penn. From what I know about the Hale character, he could be perfect. Right age, an unpredictable performer, who could bring an unexpected edge to the part. As far as I know, Penn also adores Scorsese, and he certainly needs a special movie project at this point in his career, with all the ridicule he is getting these days, not just as a failed writer. But me being a De Niro fanboy will always instantly scream: "This is a De Niro part!" 🙃 DiCaprio's White character, Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone?) and Hale are most likely the three central parts, as you've mentioned. (With some interesting casting of the husband and White's team possibly ahead of us.) What do you think, is there more to the DiCaprio character than just being a tough marshall with the heart in the right place? God forbit everybody is screaming white savior when this comes out. Is there an edge to him, or can they give him more dimension in the film adaptation? Mollie Burkhart surely needs to be more than just a helpless victim in this. It would be necessary to bring the right dynamic to the proceedings, otherwise, in this day and age, the knives will be out for Scorsese. And what about Hale? Is there already a certain complexity to him, based on the source material, something à la Bill the Butcher, and not just him being presented as a despicable, wicked movie villain. That's what I would fear most at the moment. I mean, of course you can't justify what he did, but draw him more as a man of his time is the way to go, with a characterisation that reaches beyond what's just being told in the actual story. A Daniel Plainview, for example. Or, in this context maybe more interesting, a sort of Noah Cross-in-Chinatown figure ("You see, Mister Gittes, most men never have to face the fact that, at the right time, they're capable of... anything.) And that's exactly where De Niro excelled at in the past, bringing humanity/complexity to very difficult men.

Leo_The_Last yes I've read Flower Moon - and Paint Houses! Tom White as a character is a bit colorless (no pun intended) - if I was trimming the book down for an adaptation it'd be a lot of his scenes I'd cut. I'd keep it focused on the Osage area. There's interesting tension btwn him and the FBI / J Edgar Hoover that they might wanna use but that stuff and the court scenes later on are really just a lot of redundant legality. They arguably distract from the powerful tragedy of Burkhart and her family. So I'd focus on her and spruce up her husband as a character (who Leo could play, I mean is he even confirmed for White?), bc he's the intermediary btwn her and Hale - good vs evil. Focusing on them highlights themes of family, race, capital, and the irony of Hale's scheme. Btw regarding your previous post...... Dec '16 Scorsese mentioned a lot of upcoming projects (he said then that Devil in the White City would come after The Irishman - guess not) and he mentioned a Marilynne Robinson book called Home, which I haven't read, But I hope that's still in the wings for him. It's about an old ailing reverend and his children, something much smaller scale for him, and you gotta imagine he'd go with De Niro.....though I'd cast Pacino of course!

It would be interesting to see Leo playing the part of the husband. And you're right, it would take the story in a much more intimate, twisted direction. The more I think about it, the better it sounds. So you might call up Scorsese and pitch him your idea! Obviously it would change the dynamic of the story quite a bit. Having an outsider (White) as the protagonist gives them more options to boost the traditional thriller elements. But it's also much more conventional, been there done that kinda stuff. I still think Leo is going to play the White character. Will be interesting to see who they are going to cast as the husband. Depends on how big/strong the part is going to be. Probably someone who is more thought of as a character actor, like Nivola or Sam Rockwell. Maybe someone who is more A-list territory, like Gyllenhaal. And thanks for the Marilynne Robinson reminder. I remember reading about that, but forgot about it. Maybe I buy it as a christmas gift to myself. Apparently there are two Reverend characters in the book, the ailing father and his old friend. So there's room for a book cover inscription like "Soon to be a motion picture starring Robert De Niro & Al Pacino" (take that Tom Skerritt!!). 😂

There's some reason to believe they still manage to start shooting this summer/late fall. It all depends on Scorsese I would say. His Dylan Doc is probably not that far away from completion, apparently it's something he has been working on for years. The Irishman certainly needs its time, but early signs seem to be positive, according to Schoonmaker, it just depends how long the perfection of those CGI effects needs and how those might affect their overall approach to the material, how much work needs to be done after they've assessed how the de-aging works or not. 'Flower Moon' isn't that far away from being ready. But that's just guesswork on my part. Roth has said he has been working on it for a few years now, with at least a portion of that time under Scorsese's guidance. Ferretti has been talking about this for some years now, scouting, talking about what needs to be built etc., long before they finally made it official at the end of last year that Scorsese/DiCaprio are attached to it, including enthusiastic remarks from Marty himself. Imperative is also pretty new to the game, they paid a shattering amount of money for the rights to the book alone, there was a heated bidding war with pretty much every heavy-hitter involved, a package from Paramount with Abrams and DiCaprio, Sony, Pascal, Clooney, Netflix etc. And Roth isn't cheap either. So from Imperative's standpoint, they're probably eager to get it going as soon as possible, with all the money already spent. They could be talking to the big domestic distributors at the moment, Imperative has worked with Sony (All the Money in the World) and Warner (The Mule) before, and I would say pretty much everyone of the big players are in contention (Netflix with slim chances I guess, regarding the involvement of DiCaprio). So, if it happens this year, they're almost certainly will make a big splash at the Cannes Film Market, selling foreign rights. If not, then this project is probably way off.
