After Dinner delivered one of the all-time great albums in Paradise of Replica... if you're into weird art pop, anyway: Guernica is a lot of fun, doing satirical cabaret music that both mythologizes and deconstructs Japan's imperial past. Even without understanding the language (there are translations of some songs online), the edge is clear: Gyvata does Estonian folk and it is awesome: Sachiko Kanenobu did one album in Japan, moving to California before it was even published and became a huge hit: Mass of the Fermenting Dregs is soooo much fun: Yoshiko Sai made a pair of folk funk classics in the 70s:

Here's the whole debut album of Shonen Knife - Burning Farm (1983) - they were based in Osaka, Ramones-influenced, with boosted draw after Cobain invited them to open for Nirvana on their UK tour in '91.  |
