Or at least, work which rivals some of their best big-screen performances. This seems to be happening more and more as TV continues to go where films dropped off.
Nicole Kidman, Big Little Lies (S1) Mark Ruffalo, I Know This Much is True Kate Winslet, Mare of Easttown Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Deuce (all seasons)
N/S: Michelle Williams, Fosse/Verdon Kirsten Dunst, Fargo (S2) Julia Roberts, Homecoming Patricia Arquette, Escape at Dannemora or The Act

Not quite sure these are her "best" per se, but they certainly rival her iconic film characters...
Glenn Close in...
In the Gloaming The Lion in Winter Damages
There's also Sarah, Plain and Tall and Serving in Silence...

Not exactly their definitive "best" but surely some of their finest work:
Matthew McConaughey - "True Detective" Hugh Grant - "A Very English Scandal" Jude Law - "The Young Pope" Eva Green - "Penny Dreadful" Ethan Hawke - "Good Lord Bird" Pacino & Streep - "Angels in America"

Matthew McConaughey, True Detective Ethan Hawke, The Good Lord Bird Al Pacino and Meryl Streep, Angels in America Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Deuce Mark Rylance, Wolf Hall (I mean, this is debatable because he's probably first and foremost a stage actor, but this is the world-class TV performance) Robert Duvall, Lonesome Dove Tommy Lee Jones, The Executioner's Song/The Amazing Howard Hughes/Lonesome Dove/The Sunset Limited Samuel L. Jackson, The Sunset Limited

In Pacino's case all of his best performances since Insomnia are on HBO except The Irishman - Angels in America, YDK Jack, Phil Spector, Paterno - 4 biographies all unique, all terrific and the first 2 are in his all-time top 10 which is unfnckwithable
The Executioner's Song is the best Tommy Lee Jones ever did
Sam Jackson & TLJ never in The Sunset Limited rivals their best work
Dustin Hoffman in Death if a Salesman is among his best ........the last great-ish acting he ever did was in episodes 6 through 9 of HBO's Luck
Cate Blanchett in Mrs. America was a masterclass imo

Does Olivia Colman in Broadchurch count? She's now a major film star and Oscar-magnet, but her best turn is still on British TV, in a show years before her film breakout.
Also, McDormand delivers in Olive Kitteridge her masterpiece as an actress. What a phenomenal acting.

In general with stuff like this it helps to look at that Greatest Actor/Actress across all mediums thread too...... Robert Duvall for Lonesome Dove in some ways among his most definitive role........Olivier (and John Hurt) for a great imo King Lear....... also Michael Douglas' best performance - overall - is Behind The Candelabra .....

I didn't like Kidman in BLL but that's me.
Agree with mentions of Michelle Williams, McConaughey, McDormand, Hugh Grant, Duvall, Sam L.
I put Helen Mirren across Prime Suspect in my Top 5 all-time for female tv perfs. Few others that can stand with the actor's best:
James Woods - Promise Gary Oldman - The Firm Bob Hoskins - Othello

Her performance is beautiful there, and I suppose you could argue it as her best, but in my mind that will always be either They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? or Julia.

I've got a left left to see from her, but easily my favourite Close perfomance is in The Shield S4 - she brought so much intensity to that part . Winslet is giving almost certainly her best performance right now on Mare of Easttown - I've always liked but rarely loved her, and now this joins her Eternal Sunshine work as strong justification for the acclaim she so often gets.

Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti, John Adams (though Linney is like the definition of a triple threat, she is just as much a film star as she is a theatre and tv legend) Judi Dench, Cranford and Return to Cranford Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies

Michael Douglas in Behind the Candelabra is a great example. Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies too.
From Angels in America, Jeffrey Wright gave the performance that most outclassed anything he's done on film.
Most recently, Letitia Wright was criminally underrated in Small Axe

She probably wasn't that much of a star yet back then, but I've always thought that Nicole Kidman's performance in Bangkok Hilton is one of her very best.

McConaughey in True Detective, Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders, Bryan Cranston in BB and Steve Buscemi in Boardwalk Empire... By far their best works.

I love Bryan Cranston but he is more well-known for his television work than for being a "film star."
