Spanish miniseries premiered April 30 on Netflix. I'm up to 4 out of the 8 eps... all directed by Oriol Paulo. S/o TerryMontana pacinoyes . Based on the novel by Harlan Coben who got an incredible deal with Netflix to develop 14 of his books! Ridiculously entertaining so far... Not to praise too highly but Oldboy/Polanski/De Palma/Fincher have come to mind. Very skilled control of tone, even mundane moments generate suspicion. And it's very fast-paced... and plot-packed, so it's a fun challenge to try to piece together and gain on it. There's a key line in Ep1, "How many accidents of fate do you think you get in life?" Anybody else check this out yet?

Anybody else check this out yet?I'm only 1 episode in............... but I found it sluggish and a slog to get through - nah, just kidding! ..........I've only seen The Body by Paulo - but that and this 1st episode make me think he may be better suited to this format maybe - where he can condense a lot of narrative across multiple episodes without you worrying that "his 2 hours are up". In the first 10 minutes of this show what he can do with narration and flashbacks - and flashbacks are totally his thing - he does neat little tricks that compete for your ability to process scenes quickly: like the character says he doesn't recall a person that we then see from the recollected moments that he certainly does. It makes you watch the whole frame too - like characters at the edge of the frame or immediate background could potentially be crucial - like he's hiding things in plain sight in a fun way.......lots of little tricks up his sleeve to ratchet up some tension. At the end of E1 I kept noticing how he was waving his sister in law to stay back and she kept moving inching forward .........the smallest things like that

I don't think the second half of this was as good as what came before it.... Some of the reveals are hackneyed and kinda dumb... altho we do get Jesus and Mary Chain on the soundtrack. I've checked out some of Oriol Paulo's other movies - well hello, this uses a lot of moves from The Invisible Guest, down to the casting. I liked it overall but not as pumped as I was initially.

It lost me on Ep 5 - where it was just narrating way too much .........though I'll finish it up at some point. Ep 5 is one of the most brutal things I've ever seen of multiple females getting beaten up .......can't remember the last time I was like "this violence is .......disturbing" On the other hand I loved the Spanish Holly Hunter and hope she comes back in the last 3 episodes. Her walking in heels deserves its own award tbh......

Ok, I'm going to give this close to ~ 7. It was ridiculous - makes Ozark look like a piece of neo-realism - but entertaining - like I said about The Body (2012) the only Oriol Paulo movie I've seen - he only gets away with it by going that far with it. If Paulo directed Hunters S1 it would have been totally up his alley. I really loved all the Spanish doppelgangers in this the more I think about it: Spanish Holly Hunter (Lorenna), Spanish Armand Assante (Teo Aguilar), Spanish Kate McKinnon (Zoe), Spanish Charlize Theron (Olivia) - she's Carla in The Body btw! - Spanish Josh Brolin (Mateo), Spanish Francesca Le (Kimmy Dale - um, trust me on this - totally NSFW).Spanish Armand Assante:

Oh honeys, I'm late to the game but I'm now about half way through this. How does one say in Spanish, 'too much plot?' I loved the Spanish Elite series, but this is too much! Everyone has a backstory and I'm just waiting for the Mother Superior to come out as the overall head of a vice ring to rival the Mafia. In a one word review, my would be convoluted...It's interesting to see Alexandra Jiménez ( pacinoyes refers to her as the Spanish Holly Hunter) in a very straight role as the detective as she's primarily known for comedy (Toc Toc, Superlopez, Spanish Movie, etc). Mario Casas (the Spanish Ryan Reynolds) has done too many of these types of roles. Spanish Ryan Reynolds
