Seeing as the sequel is coming out this week (In America at least), I thought I would make this thread. I just finished watching it for the first time and I definitely enjoyed it. The action was amazing, it was well shot and directed and Keanu Reeves made for a engaging lead. The story was a bit thin and cliche however and some of the acting from the supporting players felt a bit off. All that said I will be checking out the sequel when it rolls around here and hopefully they delve more into the intriguing Continental Hotel. Your thoughts?

If it weren't for Dr. George and his mad, mad, mad, mad world, John Wick would be my favorite action film of the new millennium.

Just a ton of fun. Nothing was held back . Balls to the walls action all around. Looking forward to seeing the sequel on Friday.

One of the most fun pure action movies this decade. Keanu is awesome.

I said it once, I'll say it again...
It's nothing original but it makes a Ferrari out of a Vespa. Just a well-oiled, amazing piece of machinery that's under the umbrella of an action film.
But the best part is that it adds some heart, mystery, and chemistry to the proceedings.

Also, I'd like to say that the concierge deserves his own FX/HBO series.

it's not on the level of some of the action kino we've gotten lately (Batman v Superman, Hardcore Henry, Edge of Tomorrow, etc.) but it's pretty great.

It's just a total blast. No it's not the most original concept ever, but the film is just so well made, and the fact that it created this underground world of assassins was just a smart way to introduce this character and made the film a whole lot more interesting than just a typical assassin revenge tale. It's refreshing to see a successful action hero who isn't part of a pre-existing franchise, comic book, TV show, etc, and best of all doesn't wear a damn cape. It's sleek, it's got it's own voice and style, and if done right, it could end up being one of the best action franchises of the decade.

Anybody watch this in Blu-ray/Dolby Atmos? A servility to your ears and senses and pretty much solidifies the sound editing/mixing as one of the best of the decade.
The film as a whole is extremely entertaining.

The dog scene is one of the worst things ever but it only makes it all the more fun when the rampage begins. Great, entertaining movie

A blast from start to finish. It's a simplistic premise that is sprinkled with little details and lathered in style. Amazing choreography and cinematography. One of my favorites of 2014.

It had a very cool mystique and intrigue. You want to know more about the Hotel, you want to know more about the guys who come to clean up the aftermaths. You take Willem's character's death to the heart. You are fascinated by the club scene. It really draws you in.

Just got out. Balls to the wall action. I prefer the tighter original, but this really expanded the universe and was in itself a really good stand-alone. I also loved a lot of the photography particularly in the mirrored art thingy. ***1/2
Can't wait for Chapter 3.

Glad you liked it although I'm starting to think I'm the only here preferring this one more. Maybe that expansion really tipped it over for me. Also I much prefer the mirror location for a third act than the one in the first.

Excellent film. One of my favorite action films of the century. The assassin world-building is excellent, the action scenes are superbly filmed, and Keanu Reeves is really excellent here. I compare the film to the Equalizer a lot since they came out the same year and have somewhat similar premises, but I think John Wick is the superior film in every way. The most notable difference is that in The Equalizer, McCall takes out all of his enemies so effortlessly that there's little tension or excitement to any of the action scenes In John Wick, Wick is obviously a badass and a superior shooter and fighter to most of the mooks he's up against, but he's not invincible. He gets hurt numerous times and there's still a sense of danger in the action scenes.
John Wick 2 is an excellent sequel as well. Just as good as the first one. Excellent action scenes, does great with expanding the world building, and it really raises the stakes (I won't get into specifics for those who haven't seen the film, but I really liked that the film didn't give John an easy solution to his problems). I'm an aspiring filmmaker and my desire is to make a variety of films, including the occasional action flick and John Wick (as well as Mad Max: Fury Road and The Raid films) is definitely where I'd be pulling my inspiration from.

Also I much prefer the mirror location for a third act than the one in the first. True, but to be fair they had double the budget to work with this time. I imagine that the museum set pieces were just a teeny tiny more expensive than an empty dock and an abandoned warehouse.

Also, I'd like to say that the concierge deserves his own FX/HBO series. That would be so cool. I can see it as an anthology series: Each short season focuses on one assassin or "job". John Wick is part of the background mythology and makes at least one cool essential cameo each season...
