The 12-episode adaptation follows the lives of two Irish teenagers, Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones, who tends to resemble Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Connell (Paul Mescal), through the lens of their intense on-off relationship during high school and college, made complicated by their insecurities and shifting social statuses. So, what did you think? I'm about halfway through right now.

I wanted to love it but found it deadly boring and repetitive as hell. Paul Mescal, I liked. Daisy Edgar-Jones, I didn't. I was a huge fan of Lenny Abrahamson's work in Room but I actually greatly preferred the back half of the season that was directed by Hettie Macdonald instead. Episodes 8, 9 and 10 were really the only ones I remotely cared for.

I thought it was pretty great. Paul Mescal fuckin' kills it and Daisy Edgar-Jones is great as well, their chemistry together is ... quite powerful.

Just so we’re clear, DEJ >> Mescal.

Really liked it. I too thought it could get a touch repetitive/monotonous at times, but overall I found it to be a beautifully intimate and nuanced drama. Both Mescal and Edgar-Jones are exceptional, and it's all written and directed with a sensitivity that really sets it apart. Sally Rooney's source novel is even better!

Just finished the series this morning - drying my tears now. It's both very painful and poetic. It was beautiful - the performances from Edgar-Jones and Mescal are searing and deeply-felt - they were perfectly cast here, truly. One performance wouldn't be what it is without the other. My only complaint is that beyond Marianne and Connell, the characters on the show (particularly Marianne's family and other boyfriends) are pretty one-dimensional, maybe even a bit "cartoonish." I'm not familiar with the source material at all, so I'm not sure how this translated from page to screen, but I certainly found it a bit jarring within the series. LaraQ, did you check this out?

just finished this. Edgar-Jones and Mescal were both wonderful. Especially Edgar Jones. The series is solid all the way through but I'll admit I did become progressively less and less engaged in the back half. Agree with speeders that it was extremely repetitive, and this is a small thing but I also felt that Marianne's brother was awfully underwritten to the point that his incessant cruelty comes off as mustache-twirling (weird that in 12 eps they couldn't find a way to write in some motivation or rationale beyond just he's jealous of your success and a bully--cue emotional torture--but I digress!).
Let's put it this way: the first six eps made me want to read the book, the last six made me feel like I'm probably good.

I binged on Normal People. Ugh so good, so emotional. I loved it. A beautiful love story, and the actors did such a great job. Definitely one of the best in terms of chemistry.
9/10
