deadline.com/2017/04/smurfs-the-lost-village-going-in-style-boss-baby-beauty-and-the-beast-box-office-1202064314/"It was an early night for previews yesterday with both Sony and Warner Bros. trying to respectively pull in kids and the elderly for showtimes starting at 5PM: The Culver City studio with Smurfs: The Lost Village and the Burbank-based one with Zach Braff’s remake of the 1979 George Burns-Art Carney-Lee Strasberg comedy Going in Style. This morning, WB reports that Going in Style knocked off $600K, crushing Smurfs 3 which made $375K at 2,731 locations." Decent for Going In Style, bad for Smurfs.

Lionsgate won't lose much on it though, thanks to their worldwide distribution deals, though.

Lionsgate won't lose much on it though, thanks to their worldwide distribution deals, though. Rumors is that they were exposed only for around 25% of the production cost + Domestic and UK release, they seem to have got good pre-sales, they will probably make good money but it could still be the end of the project, because it will hurt the sales of the sequels.

Lionsgate has a history of selling overseas rights in exchange for profit. They did the same thing for Gods of Egypt. Usually it's the Foreign distributor that get the bad-end of the deal when the film flops.

They do not have a choice I think, they cannot distribute outside domestic and UK, they always do it, even on their tent pole, they must love it when the movie flop and for La la land, Hungers games 1, etc... be a little piss.

Correct! I can't imagine they're pissed-off about The Hunger Games though, since those films make over 2X their budget domestically, anyway.

Just for the first, the issue is just for surprise hit, they probably always get nice value for the sequels. Those film are rare film that would have made a fortune from the domestic market alone, but the rumors are that they sold everything outside dom/uk for only 50 million on the first one, the movie made more revenue than that from theatrical alone, more than that on dvd, much more than that on Intl TV. The next one foreign market were probably all sold for 100 to 170 million.

Agreed, it should probably breakeven foreign, but a sequel is unlikely
