Oh honeys, some of you may be very surprised to learn that I actually auditioned for this role (yes, moi)... after making extensive changes to the script... but sadly nobody will ever get to see the movie about Roberta Marley, the tap dancing hophead, who gets shot at 4am by a gunman (her neighbor in the apartment below)... They said my accent was too Connecticut and not Jamaican enough but... I think they were just nit picking... Reinaldo Marcus Green sent me a telegram saying 'No Woman, No Cry.'
I don't know why all these movies have to be played by men!

Well, obviously the release date was a poor sign, but if this was actually good and well recieved, it could potentially have been an awards contender. With a 40% Rotten Tomatoes score from 70 reviews and a 43 Metacritic rating, I think we can safely count this out of the next awards season.
These recent musical biopic of black music legends haven't exactly been hitting the mark recently. Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody got a similar score to this ( 42% Rotten Tomatoes and 51 Metacritic). Here's hoping the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic ends up better recieved.

Basically what I expected since I saw the first trailer. Looks super generic and formulaic. Love Bob Marley though so I’m sure I’ll check it out on streaming

Not a surprising response but I will be seeing it Friday. I do kind of enjoy the by the numbers musician biopics if it's about someone with an interesting enough life. Here's hoping the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic ends up better recieved. With the MJ biopic even if the movie is good I get the feeling a certain percentage of critics will decide to pan it in advance because of you-know-what kind of like what happened with Joker. I think people are underestimating it commercially though, if it's a solid movie it could potentially be a Bohemian Rhapsody type commercial smash especially with how huge MJ still is worldwide.

Very good points. I'd agree that a film about MJ is ripe for having a lot of critics who have already written their bad reviews, long before they've seen the movie. I also agree that even if reviews aren't great, but audiences like the film anyway, it absolutely has potential to do Bohemian Rhapsody level box office.

That’s what I was afraid of…flat and unimaginative. Last music biopic I felt hit the mark and was very good was Straight Outta Compton. Kind of depressing to see these music icons get such boring biopics.

Kind of depressing to see these music icons get such boring biopics. The last good one was Amadeus... They used to make really good ones. I enjoyed La Bamba with Lou Diamond Philips as Ritchie Valens. What's Love Got To Do With It with Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett as Ike and Tina Turner was great. Control with Sam Riley as Ian Curtis from Joy Division.
I think Elvis mainly worked as well as it did because Austin Butler's performance was so phenomenally committed and heartfelt. But outside of that, it still suffered from the similar formulaic beats/structure of most of these films Now they all feel made by commitee and follow the same formulaic beats. The trailer for the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic feels like more of the same. The real Amy Winehouse felt way more gritty and grungy than this. I hope I'm wrong
