I put way too much effort into this list I made on Letterboxd, in which I wrote a little bit about each of my new favorites from this year: letterboxd.com/deeparcher/list/20-best-discoveries-of-2020/. Check it out! Also writing out my list here... as noted, there's only one per filmmaker and does not include 2019/20 releases: 1. Possession (1981, Andrzej Żuławski) 2. alphabetical At Berkeley (Frederick Wiseman, 2013) Bill Cunningham New York (Richard Press, 2011) The Bridesmaid (Claude Chabrol, 2004) Candyman (Bernard Rose, 1992) The Double (Richard Ayoade, 2014) Faces Places (Agnès Varda & JR, 2017) The Girl Without Hands (Sébastien Laudenbach, 2016) Knife + Heart (Yann Gonzalez, 2018) LA 92 (T. Not nearly as exciting as 2019 because it was mostly 2010s catchup. Caught some wonderful popular gems that slipped through my fingers but it wasn't as wide a net or as exciting a sampling as I was working with last year with my blitz through the 60s/70s/80s. Was kinda scratching the bottom of the barrel at times (wouldn't call Pitch Perfect required viewing but you better believe I watched it!)

It's a pretty great list in general, from Dassin to pseudo-Dassin Gilligan, the two best Korean movies I've seen, a pair of Hana and Alice films, a halfway-great MCU movie my favorite Jane Austen adaptation, Malick's best movie, a four hour long art film that I managed to survive... there's a lot of good stuff.

Probably saw more films in 2020 than any other previous year of my life, for obvious reasons. Particularly in that first major lockdown starting March, I was watching at least one, sometimes two or three films in a day. I was absolutely loving it - it got me through a lot of the harder parts of isolation - and saw many, many new personal favourites. I'll try and narrow it down to 20:
1) Memories of Murder (Bong, 2003) 2) M (Lang, 1931) 3) Barton Fink (Coens, 1991) 4) Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Herzog, 1972) 5) Lawrence of Arabia (Lean, 1962) 6) Another Year (Leigh, 2010) 7) Ordinary People (Redford, 1980) 8) The Third Man (Reed, 1948) 9) Videodrome (Cronenberg, 1983) 10) Two Days, One Night (Dardennes, 2014)
11) Shoplifters (Kore-eda, 2018) 12) Some Like it Hot (Wilder, 1959) 13) Wild at Heart (Lynch, 1990) 14) Seven Samurai (Kurosawa, 1954) 15) I'm Thinking of Ending Things (Kaufman, 2020) 16) The Straight Story (Lynch, 1999) 17) Certified Copy (Kiarostami, 2010) 18) Secrets and Lies (Leigh, 1996) 19) Nights of Cabiria (Fellini, 1957) 20) Saint Maud (Glass, 2020)

All the above are great films, the top 13 reaching or nearing GOAT level stuff. I watched a few of Woo's early this year when theaters were still open and they were some the coolest experiences I had at the theaters. Just curious, Where would you stack these against his other works? - assuming you've delved into them...

Not counting 2019/2020 releases, I think it's something more or less like this:
1. All That Jazz (Bob Fosse, 1979) 2. What’s Up, Doc? (Peter Bogdanovich, 1972) 3. Dead Man Walking (Tim Robbins, 1995) 4. The Seventh Seal (Ingmar Bergman, 1957) 5. Wings of Desire (Wim Wenders, 1987)
6. Young Frankenstein (Mel Brooks, 1974) 7. Another Woman (Woody Allen, 1988) 8. News from Home (Chantal Akerman, 1977) 9. Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (Paul Mazursky, 1969) 10. Stromboli (Roberto Rossellini, 1950)
11. Sling Blade (Billy Bob Thornton, 1996) 12. Ordinary People (Robert Redford, 1980) 13. They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (Sydney Pollack, 1969) 14. 25th Hour (Spike Lee, 2002) 15. Lifeboat (Alfred Hitchcock, 1944)
16. Mauvais Sang (Leos Carax, 1986) 17. Bringing Up Baby (Howard Hawks, 1938) 18. Cactus Flower (Gene Saks, 1969) 19. Radio Days (Woody Allen, 1987) 20. The Heartbreak Kid (Elaine May, 1972)
I watched over 400 movies this year, so I guess I didn't waste away my spare time?

12. A Better Tomorrow III: Love And Death In Saigon (1989) 17. A Better Tomorrow (1986) Absolutely fantastic film year for me. Just curious, Where would you stack these against his other works? - assuming you've delved into them... Glad you asked! I just rewatched Face/Off earlier today, and that is probably the wildest thing he's ever done. But, for me his best film is A Better Tomorrow (1986), which is definitely the most iconic of his films and also the most influencial in Hong Kong cinema and action cinema in general. The whole trilogy is worth watching, even though the second one is very inferior to the other two. Also, note that the third one (A Better Tomorrow III: Love And Death In Saigon, my favourite of the three) is not directed by John Woo but by Tsui Hark, who was the producer of the first two (and co-writer of the second one). They had a dispute over the film's screenplay and John Woo left the project. His film Bullet In The Head (1990), was his version of that story (although with different characters). Here's how I'd rank the films I've seen from him: 1. A Better Tomorrow 2. Face/Off 3. The Killer 4. Bullet In The Head 5. Hard Boiled 6. Red Cliff/Red Cliff Part 2 7. Hard Target 8. Once A Thief 9. Mission Impossible 2 10. A Better Tomorrow 2

I missed the first two when they were showing for whatever reason, but I’ll make sure to include BITH as part of an alternative ending sort of thing. With so much attention given to the building of sets, I just appreciate the fact that there is nobody better than Woo at ripping apart his sets for a movie. A treat to watch

It may looks like I love the year 2019, but that's only because I've seen more 2019 films in 2020.

It makes me happy to see members of this forum explore more of Raul Ruiz's filmography. City Of Pirates is a great film, just outside my top 5 from him. Have you seen any of his other works?

It's my cinematography win , as is the only other films of his I've seen -- Mysteries of Lisbon. Always up for more recommendations!

The cinematography of City Of Pirates is truly spectacular, but it's not even the most spectacular of Ruiz's films of 1983. You should give Three Crowns Of The Sailor (1983) a go. It's probably the quintessential Raul Ruiz film. Others that are also worth watching are The Hypothesis Of The Stolen Painting (1978) and Love Torn In A Dream (2000). My favourite from him is Time Regained (1999), but it's among his most difficult and impenetrable, so it's not a film I'd recommend to someone who is just getting into Raul Ruiz's filmography.
