actress Winona Ryder has alleged that the 64-year-old actor slandered her with an anti-Semitic slur while they were at a party in 1995.35 years ago....let's fncking KILL him and let's go to the press....... and never ever forgive or grow or anything like that because he's the same exact man like you're the same exact person too. I mean I love you but I'm an idiot for loving you...... On a different note Paul Westerberg told her to STFU at least once on National TV, but alas, she didn't listen - sorry but I'm going on Twitter............... cancelled Grandpaboy! :

And he's said them. The fact he got a redemption tour for a movie as silly as Hacksaw Ridge is mind numbing. I'd be fine if I never saw him again and it seems likely I won't based on the rate this is blowing up on Twitter.

I mean I love you but I'm an idiot for loving you...... Look, I think Mel Gibson is one of the most charismatic actors to ever step in front of a camera and I think he is the most talented actor-turned-director of the modern era and has made a few films I consider all-time favorites. But even if he has rehabilitated and grown as a person (which I very much hope he has), there are obviously going to be certain issues that arise from shit he's said that he has likely never addressed, one way or the other. I remember hearing about the Winona story a decade or so ago, when his second round of controversy was in the news, and I never heard of him apologizing for that. Every one of us has likely said some awful, horribly insensitive things that we look back on with shock and horror, and hopefully all of us have grown from them and recognize that. But part of it is acknowledging the shit you said, the place that it came from, and if you honestly want to move on and grow positively, you do have to make amends. There are those who will never forgive you regardless of what you do, but that doesn't mean you don't try.

Weren't you on here about 6 months back saying Polanski's Cesar win for An Officer and A Gentleman was ........I can't recall the word you used......but I might gently suggest that your POV on the work is not what matters to you much since that's a very great work made by a very bad man...........and maybe things you'd be "fine" with wouldn't apply to everyone but Winona Ryder just took care of that for ALL of us ......I wonder if her behavior in her personal life casts her as a legitimate judge, jury, executioner to end his career. Hint : It doesn't............. but agree to disagree .....pacinoyes almost never sides with cancel culture .....pacinoyes refers to himself in the 3rd person ............pacinoyes would like to thank the moderators for allowing divergent viewpoints and what passes for his wit.........since Awards Watch apparently doesn't allow such things. The fact that she was in The Crucible (and awful in it) is beyond delicious, pathetic irony.........

I'm not saying Gibson is owed a career - no one is owed a career - (Warren Beatty must wake every day in a literal cold sweat) .........but I'm saying .......in today's culture that 's a bitch move by Winona Ryder who could have kept her little trap shut as the song says - there was a reason I posted the song - it is exceedingly Crucible-ish......and to me it's kind of gross too that's all......I'm not defending Gibson I'm saying ..........all of us .....get off Twitter

But I agree that Ryder is awful in The Crucible (Day-Lewis is too).

She has every right to keep bitching about what Gibson said to her. If I'm a Jewish person, and he said that heinous shit to me, I'm neither forgetting nor forgiving....I don't give a shit if it happened 100 years ago! We got no right to police those whose his statements most directly affected when, if or how they should "forgive and forget". It's Ryder's prerogative to hold it against him forever. And she has the platform to keep reminding people, which is bad luck for him
Some of us may be willing to personally cut Gibson some slack and accept that he's learned from his mistakes yadda yadda, but I sure as shit won't force that mentality on others just because we don't mind watching his movies.

Short of something extreme like murder or rape I just don't care what someone did in 1995. Digging up ancient shit someone said to discredit them today is a trend that needs to stop. Honestly I think a lot of the reason young people on social media drive this stuff is a lack of life experience. Hard to understand how much a person can change in 25 years when you haven't even been alive that long.
This isn't even the worst stuff he's said. He went on an actually serious anti-semetic rant in 06 about how the Jews control everything and used the n-word in 2010. Most everyone forgave him for that stuff when he came back with Hacksaw Ridge, so IDK why you wouldn't forgive him for something in 95 that pretty much amounts to a bad joke.

I would actually say that Film Twitter is so fncking stupid that they never read Cher's autobiography where she admits to sleeping (by her own choice) with 25 year old Warren Beatty at 16.......I guarantee you Film Twitter could make that look faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar worse than 20 year old/17 year old Ansel Elgort and 17 year old "Gabby" who may not even EXIST at all. One day history will look back on this time and they will be appalled ....... ........I'm pretty much appalled now with cancel culture tbh.........

Why on earth should Ryder ever forgive him for making holocaust jokes in front of her? Some shit you say can never be taken back to the people it hurt the most. If you like his movies and want to keep watching them, the option is still there. But I really see no reason that Ryder has to let this go. It will follow Gibson for the rest of his life. He kinda just has to deal with it. I think Gibson is a misguided guy, who was brainwashed by his father into certain belief systems, so never really had a chance. I can still watch his films and appreciate his work/talent, but others don't have to.

Far too rational a post .....this suggests brain activity or even worse life activity and life experience......probably would be agreed upon by noted troublemakers George Orwell and Sir Thomas More. Before we are both executed, I've enjoyed your posts countjohn and I myself also enjoy You're Living All Over Me May God have mercy on our souls.....

Ryder (and, really, anyone represented by any of the groups maligned by Gibson regardless of his sobriety at the time) doesn't owe their forgiveness or their understanding to anyone who inflicts that level of hurt to them. We as a society should always accept people's capacity to change, but that works both ways: sometimes you have to understand that when you say or do something to another person or group, that person or group doesn't have to forgive you. And you have to live with the consequences of what you say or do for the rest of your life. We don't get to hard-reset our lives if we make a blunder; you have to learn from it and, hopefully, make the world better after the fact. In short, if someone is actually genuine in trying to become a better person rather than simply trying to rehabilitate their image, we should encourage them to be and do better rather than forever decrying them as irredeemable. But atonement and redemption are two different things; in performing the former, you don't guarantee yourself the latter.

My response was more in anticipation of the social media mobs that will likely form wanting Gibson's career to be over. Everyone already knew Gibson said shit like this in the past and were still fine with his comeback, so I don't know why this should change anything.

Like I said, this will follow Gibson for the rest of his life. Not everyone (even within the industry) was happy that Hollywood/ the Oscars rolled out the forgiveness red carpet for him with Hacksaw Ridge, so I absolutely don't believe everyone was "fine" with his comeback. But money (and his talent) talked, so he was let back in the fold to a certain extent. But it's naive to think everyone was happy about it, or that there aren't still many people in the industry who will refuse to ever work with him.

Gibson responds which should end the thread because I think my Elgort reply really ended THAT thread......that's a joke ....but it did "She lied about it over a decade ago, when she talked to the press, and she's lying about it now. Also, she lied about him trying to apologize to her back then. He did reach out to her, many years ago, to confront her about her lies and she refused to address it with him." movieweb.com/mel-gibson-responds-winona-ryder-anti-semitism-comments/
