It's fucking spectacular, as expected. It's a totally natural, organic progression from The Idler Wheel with an even more bare-bones and percussive sound, but also highly reminiscent of When the Pawn at the same time in terms of melody. It's at once playful and aggressive, funny and disturbing. Her lyrics remain as sharp and relentless as ever. I'm just a couple of listens in but it already feels like a record that will grow tremendously with time as I get to explore all the intricacies in the production. Also, currently at 99 on Metacritic.

More people on here need to be talking about this ... easily the album of the year so far.
First time I listened to it last night as kinda background noise and I loved it ... now listening to it this morning and actually paying attention to it, it fucking blew me away. This album is unreal. Totally original sound that is somehow both experimental and melodic, incredibly layered and also infectiously toe-tapping, yet the real standout here is Apple's songwriting which is bare, honest, and relentless. Take that along with her raw, emotional, often aggressive vocal performance, and this is one of the most powerful albums I've heard in a hell of a long time, and in a way that feels so necessary too. This is a masterpiece.
Favorite tracks so far: the title track, "Relay" (insane!), "Newspaper," "Ladies," "Cosmonauts," and "For Her" which I don't think is as listenable as those other songs but is just so "holy shit" that how do you not mention it.

Yeah, that was one hell of an extraordinary album. Can't wait to listen to it more and more, explore it deeper and be amazed every time.

I can’t get into it. I really dig the first song (the end puts me off but not as bad as it did the first time I listened to it) and then I just can’t really vibe with the next few songs even though there’s interesting and experimental aspects.
I’ll try to give it a listen all the way through, but it seems like I’ll have to be in the right headspace to do so.

It won't be my #1 of the year - pacinoyes AGAIN, out of touch with the critics! - my favorite record is usually one that gets the most plays and that won't be this. I'm a pop man......I like the pop music......some of this is so heavy on the percussion it could be dangerous to the cardiac rhythms of an older gentleman. ~8/10 Fave song : Cosmonauts

This one is by far her most inaccessible one, and I imagine it won't be easy to warm up to how rough around the edges it is if you're not already on board with her style. If you'd like to get into it, maybe try The Idler Wheel first before you return to it. FTBC is very much a continuation of that sound, but The Idler Wheel is more palatable and polished.

"I know none of this will matter in the long run But I know a sound is still a sound around no one"
Listened to it three times now. Inspired a re-listen of all her albums. Nothing to say except fuck, she's got that special quality some artists do of being able to paint themselves, their hopes, fear, flaws, and the innate defiance that comes with being a singular artist so vividly with the slightest turn of phrase or pivot in melody.

Only a few of her songs but none of the albums. I was thinking of looking up what her most accessible album is to try and see if I could ease in, but you already did that for me. Thanks!

Just like the last 10 years, this album probably will grow on me as time goes by, but being honest with myself I don't see it as peak Fiona Apple, maybe her most unique for sure.
Adore I Want You to Love Me ( the urgency of the lyrics !! ), Ladies and Cosmonatus, the unsual instrumatation and ideas are more rounded and focused in those songs, and by that I mean that are way more daring and explored. The rest came off to me as half-baked songs, and the experimental sounds gave me gimmick vibes, almost contrived ( elemtents like the dogs barking are't adding that much really ), but for sure are many great ideas in here and the reason why I'll listen to it in the future once more.
