Well, the movie obviously peaked mid January when DGA winners were announced. But Parasite won SAG and ignited more passion than it. Wouldn't be surprised if 1917 didn't even win the second round and something else (Hollywood, Joker, Jojo) did.

Looks to me like all the new folk they invited into the Academy really have just made it stand out compared to all the guilds.

Well, it did very well at the guilds but we must never forget that success at the guilds does not make it a done deal. The Academy's thing of everybody voting for winners in every category does very much matter. And Parasite's guild showing was not too shabby either.
Honestly, the only real surprise here is Mendes losing Directing. Pretty shocking stuff but I guess the issue there is two-fold: 1) the AMPAS Parasite love and support was really overwhelming, 2) perhaps the directorial gimmick of 1917 has been seen by the voters as not too fresh anymore right after a whole bunch of gimmicky Directing winners even though for my money Mendes has done a better job than most of those recent winners.

But it has to be said that Green Book is actually quite well regarded in many non-US territories.

Obviously, the guilds lack diversity.

Parasite's SAG + WGA + ACE was a lot more impressive than 1917's PGA + DGA.
PGA is the one award that will probably never go to a foreign film... Parasite didn't stand a chance there. DGA must have been a really close call and for all we know Bong could have lost that by a few votes.

SAG is historically not a particularly strong Oscar precursor and I would say PGA/DGA beats WGA/ACE. I think things are just changing and we need to toss out a lot of the old precursors in terms of Oscar predictions. In five or so years we might be able to look back and see what the new predictive factors are but in the meantime the Oscars are going to be a lot harder to predict.

SAG on it's own sure, but this combo is strong.

I don't know if anything really went wrong with 1917. Directing the biggest shock because DGA almost always matches. 1917 is a showcase and the type of directorial achievement they tend to reward. Maybe Mendes already having an Oscar played a part. For Best Picture, it reminded me of Spotlight over The Revenant. They went with the more "important" story and actors showcase over the tech marvel.
Parasite felt like a perfect storm. You could tell at SAG and during every award they won. People LOVED it. The reception was too hard to ignore.

This. Parasite was the talking point of the season right out of the gate.
