Making a film that is well loved enough and whichs direction is also well liked enough that they get the votes to be in the Top 5.

Some fantastic discourse here, as well as some pretty cringe hot takes.

The 5 Best Directors get in based on the quality of their film - ie they are always better than their BP counterparts (to me anyway) - so you have to not only make one of the 5 best (always arguable) you also almost always have to make films that represent the year. Lady Bird arguably did and yup, it got nodded for BD, Little Women I don't think represents the year (haven't seen it yet) - another remake, a year where everyone who beat her in Joker, Irishman, OUATIH, 1917, Parasite had just more chatter around all of the at least. Like I said, it's not a 100% lock but Bradley Cooper missed too ......just sayin' Write and direct an original film and then all things will come from that, no woman did that in 2019 - not an American woman at least.....^ Apparently Chloé Zhao did it this year - haven't seen it yet but that's always the ticket and will be next year too........insightful bastard you are pacinoyes.......

I don't know about nominations, but to win, she has to either make a war movie with a man as the main character or have the only studio movie with huge critical backing in a pandemic year in which every other guy who's usually name-checked moved to the next cycle. Don't know if it sounds too specific, should be easy for the ladies to keep up with.

Meh, I didn't say it couldn't be adapted (?) so I'm taking the victory lap anyway - fnck it.......the point was Nomadland (and Lady Bird) wasn't Little Women on its umpteenth remake in 2019......

So if Chloe is nominated/wins, there will be absolutely zero talk of her sex or her race being a factor? That was the point of this thread, if you read it.

Considering she is steamrolling the critics awards and her film is the current BP frontrunner, no, I don't think her race or gender has anything to do with it. She's an extremely talented director that has made a film that is appealing to both critics and the general audience (its won a bunch of audience awards). The last couple of awards seasons have shown that the Academy (and the industry at large) don't give a shit about filling a 'female quota', they'll just go with whoever they liked, and this year it is the extremely deserving Chloé Zhao.

Outside of some very narrow MRA DudeBro circles on the internet, no. Thus far the movie has received widespread acclaim to an extent where it would not be a surprise to see it win major awards. Same deal with Bigelow winning and Gerwig/Coppola/Campion getting noms. As I said last year I'm not sure when this phenomenon has ever taken place on a large scale.

To everyday women. Their accomplishments are constantly questioned.

And by ‘earn’, I mean that there is absolutely no (ie. zero) talk in the vein of “filling a quota” “only nominated cause she’s a women” “virtue signalling” etc etc. And I know I’m a troll, but I am serious here in that I’d like to hear some thoughts. So Greta Gerwig was not nominated, but I did hear a lot of talk about her not actually earning it had she been. It’s a critical success, box office success etc etc. So why would her nomination be questioned like that? What more does she need? It’s fine that some people wouldn’t agree with the nomination, but what about when you disagree with a male best direction nomination? What are the reasons? Is it because you think he was only nominated to fill the male quota? So yeah, what conditions are necessary for a woman to be in the best director contention and there be zero talk of why she was nominated?

I guess the best femele director right now is Lynne Ramsay, she could be nominated in the past, and she wasn't. So I guess she will be the next femele director winner, if her behaviour allows that.
This year probably at least one woman, maybe two, will earn a nom. But I'm not sure if a woman will win this year. Bigelow unlike the others femele nominee had a pretty solid career as director in Hollywood, at the time of the nomination.- She already directed several big budget films, neither a great success, but most praised.-
Ramsay is the only one, who have a unique vision, and is solid enough for a win.-

It's funny, I sort of like Lynne Ramsay and sort of hate her - I admire her films (really) and directorial mastery but her worldview is so overwhelmingly depressive and glum to the extent that if she was a man, we'd say she has no chance at all to actually win.
I think she's only made 4 features in 20 years (?) - none of which I'd watch again if you paid me - and all of which made me want to slice my throat the first time (Merry Christmas everybody!) .......she'd have to make the least "Lynne Ramsay" movie ever to actually win BD I reckon.....and she's the opposite of what I said earlier........in her case she'd have to actually stop writing her films because she can't stop being herself......and herself is too depressive and glum.

Side note: If you wait long enough I'mmina say they will have won the BD Oscar ("earn" is arguable!) - 2 years in a row - and had the number 1 film of all-time too in the S&S poll....

Are you all saying that Lina Wertmuller was nominated to fill a quota?
