And by ‘earn’, I mean that there is absolutely no (ie. zero) talk in the vein of “filling a quota” “only nominated cause she’s a women” “virtue signalling” etc etc.
And I know I’m a troll, but I am serious here in that I’d like to hear some thoughts.
So Greta Gerwig was not nominated, but I did hear a lot of talk about her not actually earning it had she been. It’s a critical success, box office success etc etc. So why would her nomination be questioned like that? What more does she need? It’s fine that some people wouldn’t agree with the nomination, but what about when you disagree with a male best direction nomination? What are the reasons? Is it because you think he was only nominated to fill the male quota?
So yeah, what conditions are necessary for a woman to be in the best director contention and there be zero talk of why she was nominated?

There was also Marielle Heller and Lulu Wang who I think would have been more than worthy additions. I personally didn't love her film, but Lorene Scafaria also received much praise.

The 5 Best Directors get in based on the quality of their film - ie they are always better than their BP counterparts (to me anyway) - so you have to not only make on of the 5 best (always arguable) you also almost always have to make films that represent the year.
Lady Bird arguably did and yup, it got nodded for BD, Little Women I don't think represents the year (haven't seen it yet) - another remake, a year where everyone who beat her in Joker, Irishman, OUATIH, 1917, Parasite had just more chatter around all of the at least. Like I said, it's not a 100% lock but Bradley Cooper missed too ......just sayin'
Write and direct an orginal film and then all things will come from that, no woman did that in 2019 - not an American woman at least.....

Female directors are obviously held to different standards to their male counterparts and as such,the only way for them to earn a BD nom without the implication that they are "filling a quota" is for them to make something so brilliant,so undeniable,that nobody will question their inclusion.There's nothing fair about it,men are allowed to be mediocre and still succeed,women aren't.

I haven't actually seen it yet, but most hardcore film buffs on social media platforms seemed most upset that Mati Diop wasn't considered for Atlantics, which did great in Cannes |

I get Parasite was their main push, but I'm thinking Director, Actress, and Cinematograhpy nominations were possible had they worked for them. |

And just to be fair to the previous female Director nominees (Wertmüller, Campion, Coppola, Bigelow, Gerwig), I honestly don't remember anyone saying they were nominated just to fill a quota.

With Gerwig, I think it was timing, if the film had been release earlier. It's obviously harder to generate pre-release buzz with a remake. With it's box office, it is appealing to the mainstream. And it is a film with a known cast. It did end up with 6 nods, including Best Picture. But it's a short Oscar season. |

I don't really remember much backlash in that vein when Sofia Coppola, Bigelow, and Gerwig for Lady Bird were nommed. Wasn't really cognizant at the time but everyone seems to respect The Piano too and I haven't heard anyone suggest Campion was nominated just for being a woman.
I was not the least bit surprised by these best director nods. They're the five movies most likely to win BP and the direction is very central to them. Little Women is more of a script and acting movie that probably would not have received a BP nom back when there were only five films. Everyone keeps bringing up Joker, but that movie is much more successful and much more flashily directed, that's more the kind of thing that gets a BD nom. To me the five choices were obvious and Gerwig getting in would have been a little weird.

I haven't seen Little Women, but common though.... there wasn't much backlash for Coppola because Lady Bird is not on the same landing strip as Lost in Translation. And I was too young to remember Campion.

Have a studio actually back their films.
For all of the bitching about Todd Phillips getting an Oscar nomination (even if I feel like he's not even the worst of the five nominees), the thing of it is that none of the female contenders had studios that actually put some support into their campaigns. A24 dropped the ball massively not just on Lulu Wang but on every contender they had, with only one film of their roster getting a single nomination. Gerwig could've done it had the season not been so compressed and her film actually been seen beyond a limited release in time. Sciamma was always going to have the foreign language barrier to contend with, and her film didn't even get selected for International Film, so a lot of voters wouldn't bother watching.
Women and minority filmmakers should be recognized, and indeed the game is stacked against them so thoroughly, but I also think that this idea that Gerwig was "owed" a nomination because she's a woman is missing the forest for the trees. The thing is, there's a reason that four movies garnered double-digit nominations this year when that's never happened: because the season was compressed and people barely bothered to watch much outside that initial top four. 1917 came on strong at the end to take on the fifth spot (and potentially surge into the frontrunner position, due to timing), but the fact is that studios weren't giving their female filmmakers enough support to get them over that hurdle in the first place.
