has anything like ever happened before? As in at least that many movies hitting the double digit mark for nominations?

Just a symptom of how boring these nominations were that the Academy defaulted to the same four films in nearly every category.

Closest I can think of is when Julia and The Turning Point had 11, and Star Wars 10.

Closest I can think of is when Julia and The Turning Point had 11, and Star Wars 10. Yes, it's never happened before. I guess it was because of the shortened season? I don't know know, but I hate it even if I like all four films. It just makes it so boring. One film sweeping can be okay because it hasn't happened for awhile, and of course depends on whether or not you're a fan of the film, but four films dominating the nominations to such a degree just feels ridiculous when there's things like Uncut Gems, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Dolemite Is My Name, Knives Out, The Farewell, The Lighthouse, etc. that would have been worthy in at least one technical category that those 4 films hogged all the spots for. On a brighter note, Annie Hall only had 5, so maybe there's hope for Parasite or one of the other films that didn't get double digit nominations to win Best Picture. I won't hold my breath, but even if I'm not happy with all the nominees, if we get a strong set of winners, that would go a long way to making me happy with this year's award season.

That's a good point on the shortened season. Could definitely be a reason.

Oh honey, Schindler's List had 12...
I would list them here, but then it would be MsMovieStar's List.

Mary Poppins (13), Becket and My Fair Lady (12) also did it. That's it. So this is definitely the first time we've had four of them.
