I haven't seen this discussed yet so I'm sorry if it has, but does anyone else think that the shortened season ultimately backfired? They did it out of hope that it would bring more surprises, but ultimately these nominations just reflected the same trends in taste/preference that we've seen at every other awards show so far, and overall they were probably the least surprising batch of nominations in a long time. I guess that's the monkey paw thing in my life again. I wanted a shorter season because I hate how it gets so dragged out with most of the categories being decided early on, but I'd definitely rather have more variety in the nominations instead of this nightmare. I guess I'm okay with late February because it gives them enough time to see more things, but not drag things out too much like the old middle of March ceremony did. That really was the worst because so many things would always come out right at the end of December only in NY and LA, and it would take several months to finally reach here. They couldn't change it cause they had already committed to it. There's a video on YouTube of this being discussed by Goldderby experts. This was just a one off and I guess they did this cause of declining rates. Yeah I could see this definitely backfiring no matter how much money 1917, Joker, and OUATIH made. Less variety means more people probably aren't interested in watching unless they really love the top 4 movies. The worst acting snub has got to be Song. I thought with that SAG ensemble that there wss no wsy it would miss. How did Roma do better with less support? Netflix money ain't nothin' to fuck with. Song had a very strong category to contend with, while Aparicio and de Tavira really had to make sure only one perceived contender underwhelmed. They could potentially go 1 for 24, possibly 0 for 24 if there's an upset in Supporting Actress, , but they had a great day today even if they missed a few nominations here and there like Dolemite Is My Name missing Costume. Assuming that they can last, eventually they'll win the big prize, but maybe they'll have to find a different campaign strategy. Obviously spending a lot of money and taking their films to all the big festivals has worked in getting a lot of nominations for them, but they're still unable to win the big prize.

Netflix's win ratio is not that impressive. I bet they change their plan going forward. They cant afford to give out 150 mil on dream projects with no roi.

I didn't realize Terry Moore was still alive. Huh.
Yeah, I did begin to wonder if voters would react well to Sandler's "threat." But good to see that at least they respected his work, even if they were too snotty to recognize it.

I mean, it says a lot that two of the three actors mentioned here are comedians by nature.

Academy members weigh in on the acting nominations: SourceThis is why I never thought López was a shoe in. The Academy is known for being snobby in terms of who they consider to be part of their party. And they have a great reason to be. Hustlers is a filthy and degenerate movie and Jlo is a celebrity And I say this as someone who goes occasionally to strip clubs

Hustlers is a filthy and degenerate movie and Jlo is a celebrity And I say this as someone who goes occasionally to strip clubs I never thought she was a contender for the win this year because I knew the industry didn't take her seriously as an actress (just like I thought the same about Sandler), but I thought she was pretty safe for the nomination because of how weak the category was. I guess the combination of her baggage and the weakness of her movie ultimately proved fatal.

prayer circle for:
- 1917 losing best picture.
- Jojo Rabbit losing adapted screenplay.
- The Irishman not going home empty-handed.

Jesus, just looking at the most likely winners for each category it seems like The Irishman will be the only BP nominee to go home empty-handed...
We must keep hope alive!

All I ask of the Academy tonight is they don’t make me watch Jojo Rabbit win an award for best writing

Hard to get excited as everything has already been decided. Hoping for Parasite BP, Bates, Pesci or Pacino and Lighthouse cinematography wins.

1917 and Parasite are both in my top 3 so don’t really see any BP/Director outcomes that I’ll be disappointed with.
