What does this mean, exactly? To be ageist is to be self-loathing - we all grow old. I wasn't talking about her age. I was talking about her relevancy and when she was a huge star. Viola Davis became Viola later in life. Glenn was a huge star in the 80's and 90's and that was the perfect time for her to win cause that was during her peers. Yep. I ended up predicting Close after she got a standing ovation at the Globes and won SAG, but one of the few things that I did call correctly, lol, was that I thought she wouldn't win because she hadn't really been a part of anything that noteworthy for a long time except I guess Albert Nobbs which was pretty small like The Wife too. As erickeitel pointed out Moore had just won Cannes, and she also had swept the television awards for Game Change just a few years before, and was in Best Picture nominee The Kids Are Alright where she had some awards traction, and A Single Man where again she had a little bit of traction about a possible supporting nomination. She also had a high profile guest stint on a show that actors loved 30 Rock and had a high profile role in the Hunger Games trilogy, so I think all of that helped Moore be seen as someone that should already have an Oscar and that the timing was perfect to finally make it happen. pacinoyes and I believe other posters have pointed this out too now where those that have won on television just before or a few years before being in contention for the Oscar seem to have an advantage now. This seems to be especially true for Best Supporting Actress now where King, Janney, Davis, Arquette, and probably Dern were all Emmy winners, in most cases recent ones, that won the Oscar. This has also spilled over to other categories as well like Malek winning last year and winning an Emmy shortly before; although the role plus how much his film made was the bigger factor, but still the Emmy probably helped too. Plus Bryan Cranston and Steve Carell's recent nominations were probably helped by the fact that they had a lot of success in television too.

I think the only thing that can stop Joaquin at this rate is Joaquin himself. Joaquin is not as deranged, creep, weirdo etc as sometimes the impression when I hear people discuss his case. His quirkiness is only gonna endear him even more when added to his enormous, revered talent, especially when his authenticity and his own reverence for his colleagues stands out as much as his quirkiness. So. No. Even Joaquin is not gonna stop Joaquin now. 🤗 It's kinda like the Christian Bale thing in 2011. I read he was going to go earlier in the week, so I guess he did. Good for him; although I see on Twitter some are dragging him, Fonda, and the others for using fossil fuels to travel back and forth to D.C.

morton - Fonda is currently living in D.C., so she's not traveling back and forth.

Seriously? What do those draggers do in their lives themselves? Become Captain Fantastic?

I wouldn't say "anything can happen" but I would not rule out Edgerton just yet. He's Phoenix's only competition after all, the movie was a hit, and if Elton John's the frontrunner for Original Song, that might work for Edgerton's chances too. Even if Joker is the most-nominated movie at BAFTA, Edgerton is playing a national treasure of theirs, plus he's hit all the televisied precursors. But I'm still predicting Phoenix, as I have since September. Welp, that settles that.

Forget about Phoenix. He was phenomenal in Joker. I'm praying it's Zellweger who gets Rick'N'Rolled.

I think he's winning but it's the craziest thing, I thought he already was a winner. I forgot Phillip Seymour Hoffman beat him with Capote. I had it in my mind that Joaquin won for playing Johnny Cash for some reason. 😂
