Curious to see what people say here and I mean from actors/actresses who actually have nods - not like say Donald Sutherland - but a nominated performer who missed for their best work ever for you. I'm going with Nicole Kidman in Birth - I am not a huge fan of hers like some are on here - but I do like her and she's been nodded 4 times - but Birth allowed her to do all the things she does well and in a most challenging role too. In fact she's not nodded for her two best performances to me - the other being To Die For........

I'm very happy that Isabelle Adjani has two highly deserving Oscar nominations (both of which she should've won) but she still wasn't nominated for what I consider to be the greatest female performance of all time - "Possession".
And to mention another great French lady - Juliette Binoche instantly came to mind with "Three Colors: Blue" and "Certified Copy".

William Hurt - The Accidental Tourist Javier Bardem - The Sea Inside (obviously this happens a lot to foreign actors and actresses, but I still name him, cause they nominated Bardem three other times) Leonardo DiCaprio - Revolutionary Road Sidney Poitier - In the Heat of the Night

Marion Cotillard for Rust and Bone and Javier Bardem for the Sea Inside are the first I can think of.

SO MANY. I'm just going to do the first few that are off the top of my head. If I really wanted to work on this I could give you a thousand and a half examples.
My favorite Gosling performance is either The Place Beyond the Pines or Drive, depending on when you ask me and either way this is my answer; he's completely deserving of his nominations, but these are his best.
I'll also include Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky Andrew Garfield, Silence Gene Hackman, The Conversation

Gary Oldman wasn't nominated for his best supporting role (and missed some of his best leading too).

I think Leo's best performance is a tie between Rev Road and Blood Diamond, so I guess he half qualifies?

Lynch often gets career-best performances from his actors, and four of those weren't nominated:
Naomi Watts, Mulholland Dr. Laura Dern, Inland Empire Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet Sheryl Lee, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

Some of these performances are BARELY their "best", but anyhoo:
Sissy Spacek, 3 Women Isabelle Huppert, The Piano Teacher Laura Dern, Inland Empire Toni Collette, Japanese Story Naomi Watts, Mulholland Dr. (her only great performance) Jennifer Connelly, Requiem for a Dream Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma or Two Lovers Kate Winslet, Heavenly Creatures
Gene Hackman, The Conversation Jeremy Irons, Dead Ringers Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips Sean Penn, 21 Grams Johnny Depp, Ed Wood Mark Ruffalo, You Can Count on Me Joaquin Phoenix, Two Lovers (there's really not much in between this and The Master, though)

It happens more often than not, so rather than list every actor who it applies to, I'll just stick to actors with four or more nominations to their name.
Sissy Spacek: Badlands
Gene Hackman: The Conversation / The Royal Tenenbaums (I personally love Unforgiven the most, but the other two consistently duke it out for the top spot so I felt I had to acknowledge it)
Amy Adams: Arrival
Deborah Kerr: The Innocents
Tom Hanks: Captain Phillips
Sean Penn: 21 Grams
Glenda Jackson: Marat/Sade
Then you have folks like Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Glenn Close, Jessica Lange and Robert Duvall who gave their best performances on TV, but they were largely nominated or won awards for those performances.
