And they're both "We live in a society!" movies. What the hell does this meme even mean anyway? I haven't seen either film, but I'm tired of hearing this phrase and not understanding it.

LOL, I don't understand its history either, but this is what I found about it: "Basically, its an ironic meme which is an edit of an actual meme. the meme is a photo of joker from the batman series, and in impact font above him you can see "we live in a society where..." and then a long rant/observation and basically its a meme which is supposed to be unironically "woke". some guy edited the picture and left just the "we live in a society" part, giving an ironic take on the "woke" message, and the original meme in general. and since thats pretty funny, people started doing edits of it, so we are starting to see more society memes. sorry if im explaining it badly but highly ironic memes arent something easy to explain/understand. you just gotta spend lots of time experiencing them and eventually they'll be the funniest thing ever."

It's a meme, generally seen it used as a way of mocking people/art who share very shallow (and often childishly edgy) and/or completely useless "realizations" about the world we live in and then act like they're on to something profound or life-changing. And of course as with all Gen Z memes it's also occasionally used in a completely incoherent or meaningless way, which makes it even funnier.

So basically the meme was preemptively made in response to Todd Phillips's Joker?
