I'm not as big a fan of the movie as some people, but I really like this performance. In fact, she sort of makes the movie for me. She's so enigmatic, you can tell something's not quite right with her but can't put your finger on what. I almost wouldn't call her a Femme Fatale because they generally don't kill people themselves and manipulate people with raw sex appeal, where as she just made Bogart feel protective of her. I was surprised to see that a lot of people didn't like the performance and thought she was miscast.

I'm not overly enthused by the performance or the win, but there were worse choices that decade.

Hahaha, I read "Mary Astor" and thought about The Great Lie instantly. Mea culpa. I actually really liked her in The Maltese Falcon. Nothing groundbreaking, but much better than her Oscar-winning turn.

It's been a while, but I remember her doing fine. I didn't like the movie as a whole, though.

I honestly feel like the biggest Falcon fan on this board here. I'm surprised so many people are down on it. It seemed universally loved for me which is why I noted my opinion in the OP since I thought it was out of the ordinary. If this makes you feel better, when I was in film school, a kid once said he watched it and didn't like it, and all the professors smirked and made knowing looks at each other like "what a precocious kid, he'll know better one day". And a lot of these guys were somewhat "maverick" type guys who were critical of Old Hollywood, so I've always assumed it was held in very high esteem amongst the "serious film community" since then.

I thought she was terrible. It's a tricky part but she was overcooked. I prefer her Oscar winning role. Of what I've seen, The Palm Beach Story is my favourite performance, it's almost like a differet performer, relaxed, sexy, unassuming, with a natural spark to it.

I thought she was very good playing a suspicious "bad" women.

I thought she was unbelievably bad. My choice for the worst miscasting by actress in the 40s. Outside of Maria Ouspenskaya and Edna May Oliver I don't think anyone could have been less sexy. She looked 15 years older than her age, worn out, very tired, and those clothes only made her look more matronly.

She was very good as Brigid O'Shaughnessy, the whole time it was unclear whether or not she could be trusted.
