Some films can be considered great, even masterpieces, immediately after viewing, but then don't leave much of a lasting impression. An example for me is Roma from last year. After watching it I gave it a perfect 10 and couldn't praise it highly enough, and I'm sure I'd still consider it great on a re-watch, but I've barely given it a second's thought since that viewing.

There is no movie I'd call great that I also find forgettable. Though if you mean movies that initially struck me as great that dwindled a lot in my mind as time went on (which doesn't happen often at all for me), two that come to mind are Moonlight and Through a Glass Darkly.

Moonlight is an example of a movie I found to be great, bold and all those things I love, but didn't inspire much passion from me on the long run. It's still in my Best of... list from 2016 and I believe it'll be in my decade-end round-up as well, but now I wouldn't rank it above some simpler movies like Toni Erdmann and Manchester by the Sea from that same year.

Boyhood. I had it as my #1 of the year but haven't had any desire to watch it again. I've found myself re-watching many others from 2014 but Boyhood hasn't stayed with me.
