Finally carved out the time to catch Mati Diop's Cannes-winning debut. I thought it was deftly shot and had a really groovy, ethereal score, but I dunno... it felt a bit overstuffed despite a relatively bare-bones premise. I wasn't surprised to learn after seeing it that it was based on a short; it definitely feels like it was unnecessarily expanded in parts. There is a beautiful sort of melancholy tinged throughout the entire film, but it ultimately left me feeling hollow.

The premise of the film is indeed quite slight, but I found it's atmosphere extremely entrancing. It's definitely one of the most atmospheric films of the year, as it just oozes somberness and there is a touch of moodiness to it that I found extremely interesting. And through it's metaphysical romance it manages to criticize many subjects, capitalism, religion and tradition. A simple film but one extremely ambitious and full of interesting ideas and context. It's probably one of my favourite films of the year so far.
