2019 North Texas Film Critics Association

I've been over all the awards already lol, but I just thought it was interesting that Cynthia Erivo keeps missing so many of these regional awards. I did have her getting in, but I wonder if she'll have enough number ones now. I was hoping that there would be at least two WOC get in since I think it's only happened once in the leading actress category, and that was in 1972, but I think Zellweger, Johansson, and Theron are in which only leaves two spots for Awkwafina, Erivo, Nyong'o, and Ronan. Just last week I thought Nyong'o could still miss because of the genre bias of AMPAS, but she's been doing so well and also got the SAG nomination that I think she'll have enough passion to get in. Not sure about the other spot.

Also this is the second Texas group today, Houston Film Critics Society, was the other where Jennifer Lopez missed. I don't think it means anything as far as her nomination chances go, but the regional groups went a different way in 3 of the 4 acting categories than I thought. I thought Phoenix would do better or at least as well than Driver, but that Driver would win at least one top tier award. (Of course I didn't predict Sandler doing so well with critics either.)

Then I thought Zellweger and Lopez would be leading. Zellweger is tied for second place I believe behind Nyong'o who totally surprised me by having such a remarkable run, but Johansson has got some momentum in the past few days so she could pull ahead. I would have felt more confident that she could pull off the upset had she won a major critics award, but at least she's showing more signs of life lately. Lopez also is only 3 awards now behind Dern, but I didn't think Dern would win so many non-televised awards.

This is also the second Texas group that listed Annette Bening in The Report as one of the Best Supporting Actress performances of the year, Dallas Film Critics Association, was the other for Bening. I haven't been following it personally, but I saw someone say that The Report was raved by major publications in the UK, and since Bening got a surprise BAFTA nomination a few years ago, I'm tempted to make her a NGNG. For the Oscars, I think she can still make it for the final spot assuming Dern, Lopez, Robbie, and Johansson are in, with only a Globe nomination because she's basically Amazon's only hope for an above the line nomination, and Pugh and Zhao aren't that well known.

These guys have been around for a few years.
