Or. Both films and performances are forgettable, even though the actresses have carried the film, yet I think both have received more critical recognition and awards than they should.

I think these are quite close because the performances are the films and the films aren't very good.....with Zellwegger I admire how hard she worked at it......with Williams I am more enthralled with her actor-ish craft. I called her the best American actress of her generation even before Fosse/Verdon but that and this are things she should be all wrong for that she somehow triumphs over.
I very much like biopics where actors are not tied into mere mimicry and I just am more drawn to her type of acting style - even in how she suggests some awful things about Monroe. One of which is that Marilyn may not be have ever been equipped on a mental level to understand her own choices at all ..........which is going far deeper into that flimsy script than it deserved or than others would have played it.

Both performances are equally bland and weak for me, but I'll go with Williams 'cause at least her movie isn't complete garbage.

Oh honey, you may not know this... but I auditioned for Judy... and I totally underestimated the handful of pills and slug of bourbon and was wheeled out on a gurney before the Director could yell, 'Next!' It's not an easy role to play. Renee is very hard core (all those years offscreen, partying incognito in Ibiza paid off) and she also did her own singing (Karaoke bars in Japan) so I feel she deserves to win this.

I had zero problems with Renee's performance. Where as I think Michelle's tormented behind closed doors stuff was better probably than anything Zellweger did, I think she completely fell flat when trying to do the 'Marilyn' scenes, and that dragged the overall thing down big time for me.
