As inspired as that would be, you can never count on the Academy being that awesome. And there doesn't seem to be a consensus on which supporting actress to back (Park So-dam and Lee Jung-eun have been getting equal support/ink), whereas Song Kang-ho doesn't have internal competition, and he's actively campaigning as the face of the film.

Asian actors in foreign language movies historically have a tough time getting nominated, even if the Academy loves their movie. They loved Kurusawa movies, but never nominated his iconic star Toshiro Mifune. They loved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but apparently none of the wonderful performances within the movie were Oscar-worthy. Of course you can find an example here or there to the contrary, but it is a very noticable blindspot.

There was no Oscar-worthy acting in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon though. Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat have one-dimensional characters and Ziyi Zhang has the same expression on her face for the whole movie (even when her character is swordfighting).
