I really think that the 1917 snub here and the Little Women snubs at the Art Directors and Costume Designers guild can be attributed to both films being late-comers and the season taking place so early this year. Maybe many guild members just didn't have the chance to see them. Anyway, I already see a lot of folks overreacting to these snubs and I don't really see the point in that.

That's a fair point, but still -- you'd think they would've saved a spot for it. It's not like voters are always 100% honest about seeing the movies when they vote.

That's true since The Rise of Skywalker got in both Design guilds. Although these folks seem more honest to me on that front because they always nominate Star Wars movies and yet the new one is not here.

I saw someone bring up that with the Design guilds they could at least see the designs in another format like in a campaign package that has a sampling of the costume designs, but for this guild, you really need to hear and see it in context I would think same with 1917. So that explanation made sense to me. I just think this is going to be a weird year with the guilds because everything was moved up, but there's actually quite a few late contenders this year when last year it seemed like only Vice was the only overall major contender once reviews came out about Ben Is Back, Destroyer, Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen of Scots, The Mule, On the Basis of Sex, Welcome to Marwen, etc.

I like this argument on paper but it's not like Little Women and especially 1917 haven't been getting mentions elsewhere with the critics and such. Their absence here is a bit more strongly felt than something like Cats or Star Wars would have been, and Star Wars got in Hopefully it's just a weird year. The possibility of 1917 missing sound and Little Women missing costume/production design is unfathomable, but their snubbing with the guilds still feels pretty odd.

I guess this boosts Ford v Ferrari's chances? I still think 1917 gets nominated in both categories. It just has to. AMPAS is crazy about war movie sound, but maybe it's not the frontrunner anymore.
