Damn, Detective Pikachu got hosed. Noooooo!!!!! Okay I haven't seen all these nor will I , but I can't believe it. Surely it was worthy to make it on this list over some of these contenders. The movie wasn't very good, but they blended the fantasy world with our world so realistically. It was the best part of the movie.

The Aeronauts Avengers: Endgame The Irishman The Lion King Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
I was half-tempted to put in a “shocker” snub and replacement, but really, what surprise is there this year?

I really wouldn't overlook 1917. True, but I’m not bold enough to call it. I thought Dunkirk would be a sure thing, so I’m really skeptical about its chances. I’m also not feeling Ad Astra gets in. With Avengers, Lion King, and Star Wars all competing, I don’t see Disney giving it a huge push.

I think the little film that could in this category this year is going to be Alita: Battle Angel. So far it's been nominated at the Annies and Satellites and just made this shortlist. I'll likely be wrong on one of these, but pretty firm opinion on this one. Here are my predictions:
Alita: Battle Angel Avengers: Endgame Ford v. Ferrari The Lion King Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
I'd love to include 1917, but after seeing it, the VFX feel very minimal by war film standards so I can see it missing. Think if they want prestigious to join the other blockbuster films it'll be between Ford v. Ferrari and The Irishman, but think ultimately it'll go with the crowd-pleasing former. Of course, it will also depend on how well the Bake-Off goes over for each (think that's a big reason why Solo made it in last year).
Big shame about Detective Pikachu though. That's my winner thus far in the category (really didn't like the film, but the VFX are absolutely stunning). There's always one that really should have made the list and doesn't.

Thanks for giving more info about 1917. The movie was pretty bad although there was potential in there, but Alita did look very good. They did a lot of world building too, but I forgot most of what it was about except some kind of roller derby, bounty hunter killers including one with dogs, and a terrible love interest. Oh and I hated the ending because it was clear they were trying to set up a franchise.

I saw The Lion King on a plane the other day. It was on the screen in front of me and my remote wouldn't even let me turn it off.

You're very welcome! 1917 is definitely a tech contender, but more in terms of Cinematography, Editing, and Sound I think. I haven't seen Alita yet, but have a screening invite to see it on the big screen soon so will see how I feel about it haha. It didn't look great (story-wise I mean), except maybe in a campy sense, but definitely looks very strong visually and very VFX-heavy so think that will work to its benefit. Especially when the lead actress is pretty much CGI the whole film (I would assume).

And it is impressive (if not *always* seamless). If it does get in, it’ll be on the back of Salazar and the other mo-cap actors, because that’s what carries the film, and likely what they’re gonna put all their chips on.

But I'm sure it'll look great in the final film...right??? I legitimately don't think that's any worse than the CGI in Endgame, which might be second in line in terms of likelihood to win after The Lion King (which I haven't seen but also looks pretty bad).

Guys, don't overthink it too much with 1917 and Ford v Ferrari - this branch does not go for practical effects even if the movie's prestigious. They always nominate films for their CG work so unless the bakeoff reels (if they make it to the bakeoff at all) of these movies emphasize the CGI, they ain't getting nominated.
Now, Alita makes much more sense as a potential nominee. Supervised by 4-time winner Joe Letteri, it's exactly the type of effects they can go for. Although I did find a lot of it to be too cartoony-looking. I do think that Alita eventually gets snubbed like The BFG did (I'm mentioning it because it was also by Letteri, it was also heavy on performance capture and it also underwhelmed financially) but I can at least see it as a nominee.
As for The Irishman, of course the deaging has been the subject of a lot of buzz for the movie but the truth is that this branch doesn't often go for deaging effects. What they do go for is the creation of realistic digital people and Gemini Man seems like a perfect contender in that regard. If they make a good reel for it, it's gonna get that nomination. The work is pretty crazy actually so unless they fuck up that reel, they're in.
