Am I the only one already getting really tired of this "period piece with a modern edge" trope?
I mean, I'm sure I'll check this out at some point, mostly for ATJ, but I can't say I'm really looking forward to it.

It looks like a really straightforward adaptation of the book to me. As a fan of the novel, I'm looking forward to this.

Am I the only one already getting really tired of this "period piece with a modern edge" trope? we talking about Emma or Little Women There's definitely a trope at play but I'd rather watch any Austen adaptation before most mainstream blockbusters or hell, most mainstream movies in general at this point. And honestly I love the idea of modern takes on Austen's work particularly because she's so innately feminist and pretty radical. I doubt this will rise to the level of Emma Thompson's brilliant adaptation of Sense and Sensibility in '95 but there's definitely a precedent for what this movie seems to be going for.

I mean, Little Women did it to an extent, yes, but much more restrained. It doesn't hit you over the head with the "LOOK HOW DIFFERENT THIS IS" thing like Love and Friendship, The Favourite, seemingly this, etc do. And yeah, of course I'd rather see this than some MCU bullshit or whatever, I'm just saying this whole "ooh, we put an original twist on our costume drama" thing is really lacking in originality at this point and I'm growing kinda bored with it. That said, I'm making a lot of assumptions based on Emma's trailer and I should really just give the film itself a fair shot... it's probably good.

It doesn't hit you over the head with the "LOOK HOW DIFFERENT THIS IS" thing like Love and Friendship, The Favourite, seemingly this, etc do. but all those movies felt extremely distinct. The Favourite felt exactly like a Lanthimos film and its edge was particular and biting and deadpan, and then Love and Friendship just felt like a Stillman joint. I don't think we're anywhere close to the subgenre feeling overly-homogenous yet. And I'd take any of these modern take costume dramas over the bland nothing of films like The King or Mary Queen of Scots or *shudder* Outlaw King.

This is my comfort food. Loved it. I laughed, I teared up, I marveled that such a long book was so beautifully fit into a two hour running time. Just lovely. I have a headache and can't think too well right now. But it was heaven.
