Third time was the charm, and I finally found a worthy new addition to my annual Christmas watchlist.
It’s less a variation of Arthur Christmas than you may think, and more like a mixture of The Emperor’s New Groove and Miracle on 34th Street, set during the Hatfield-McCoy feud. It’s a really charming, funny, if occasionally slapstick heavy movie, with such a big beating heart.
It rests a lot on the friendship between main character Jesper, voiced superbly by Jason Schwartzman, and J.K. Simmons’ rugged but tender hearted Klaus. Their interplay and chemistry carry a lot of scenes in this movie, and elsewhere is also a charming voice cast, including Rashida Jones, Will Sasso, and a scenery chewing Joan Cusack as the villain.
But if anything is the star of the film, it is without doubt the animation, which is absolutely beautiful. It’s presented in a Paperman style of hybrid-animation, combining 3D models and backgrounds with hand-drawn and cel-shades overlays, and I was agape many times at how beautiful the film looked. It’s so fluid, so expressive, and so vivid. Aesthetically speaking, I don’t think I’ll see a film that looks better, or more unique than this.
If you get a chance, check it out on Netflix.

Quite original, beautifully animated but also a bit predictable. Thankfully it's predictability didn't put much of a dent. Perfect for Christmas viewing- 8/10
