When that guy is on he's one of the best, most creative, daring, and inventive mainstream moviemakers that there is. Sadly his misses have started to far outweigh his hits, and unlike his NYC brethren Woody Allen, he doesn't seem capable of churning out watchable movies in his sleep. Some of his bad ones border on the unwatchable. When the Levees Broke is better than anything Allen did since Manhattan. I still probably prefer Allen overall, but after Manhattan I don't think his films have had the vision his 70s stuff did, which is by far his best decade. Allen is certainly more watchable tho. Allen has 2 all time greats (Annie Hall, Manhattan), Lee has 1 (Do the Right Thing), but I do think Lee is currently more relevant.

Even in his greatest films which i love he makes some questionable decisions but I will say, I don't think he's ever made a boring film.
Like Billy Wilder once said about his work "his films are full of life" and I don't think you can that away from him
