Other than Malcolm X ,everything else he's made is garbage

When that guy is on he's one of the best, most creative, daring, and inventive mainstream moviemakers that there is.
Sadly his misses have started to far outweigh his hits, and unlike his NYC brethren Woody Allen, he doesn't seem capable of churning out watchable movies in his sleep. Some of his bad ones border on the unwatchable.

So hit or miss for me. But I do consider 25th Hour to be one of my most favorite films of all time.

From what I've seen, I like him as a filmmaker.

I have only seen two of his films, but I have liked what I have seen.

When he's on, he's terrific. 25th Hour and Do the Right Thing are tremendous and his documentary work (especially everything he did about Katrina) is consistently good and often great. When he's off, though, he can be downright terrible.

Pretty sure the only film of his I've seen is Do the Right Thing, which was really, really great.
So I guess I'm a fan.

I mostly like his films, but he's made a lot of stinkers during his career. Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X are terrific though.

Putting aside that I find him very annoying as a person, he's made some good films. Not always though.

Some of his earlier works are the best like Do the Right Thing, 25th Hour, and Malcolm X.

Not the biggest fan but I like to look at his work and the tricks of his style - especially the montage which he's made his own distinct feature.
1 near great film - until the very end (Do The Right Thing), some good but to me overrated stuff (The 25th Hour), some underrated stuff (He Got Game) and a whole lot of mixed things (Malcolm X), outright letdowns (a lot of those) or outright disasterpieces (Oldboy remake).
Will be fascinating to see if he snags a Best Director win this year for Da 5 Bloods. He's occupying a perverse middle ground atm between wise groundbreaking old master director (nah, he's not really) and a kooky lunatic Knicks fan (nah, he's not really - but if you didn't know it, he comes across sorta like it).

Interestingly when I first think about him my first impulse is always that I really don't care about him. But actually I like most of his films I've seen and he has a pretty good average rating for me. But on the other hand he hasn't made a single film I love and (lower) 8.5 is the highest rating I give to one of his works. Also the six films I've seen are basically his most acclaimed ones, while I haven't seen any of those, which are considered rather poor.

He's made a couple good movies (25th Hour, Malcolm X) and other than that I don't really care for him. His style just isn't really my thing.

Love his style, creativity and the atmosphere of most of his Joints, he has directed 2 masterpieces (Do The Right Thing and X) and a lot of others very good stuffs (with a special mention for Clockers), has gotten pretty fantastic performances from many of his actors, worked 4 times with the GOAT Denzel (can't wait for the 5th), is a big supporter of the France Football Team... this man has a lot of things going for himself.
As a downside, I haven't truly liked one of his film since almost 15 years and Jungle Fever has one of the worst ending in a movie, ever.

It's hard because I don't understand or like his type of films. Even that I enjoy Malcom X. Maybe if he makes more Mainstraim Classic films his fans would be millions.-

One of the greatest American directors of all-time. Anyone who thinks different is someone I probably don't want to know.
The fact that he's still doing relevant work at the highest level with things like The BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods in his 4th decade as a filmmaker, when generational peers like Oliver Stone slid into irrelevance 2 decades ago is something that shouldn't be overlooked. He is part of the fabric and Canon of American film.

Apathetic. Almost all of his films fall apart in the third act, which is a big no-no for me. He's talented, for sure, but just can't manage to slide into home plate.

One of my all time favorites. Even when he fails like in the case of Girl 6, or She Hate Me, it's still quite fascinating. Crooklyn is a super underrated film, and quite wonderful.

Almost blows my mind when somebody bumps up a five year old thread. To be honest when I made my original post, Blackkklansman hadn't even been released yet, and that was the movie that led to his "comeback" so to say. It also led me to explore his filmography in even further detail, and I gotta say I have more appreciation for Lee as a director then I did even prior. Also I feel OLD!

I haven’t looked at him the same way after watching She’s Gotta Have It bc of a sex scene he was in. He was licking the actress’ nipples and it was such an uncomfortable close-up shot, and it came off as very creepy and predatory since he was also the director.
So I don’t like him. But I understand his contributions to film and paving the way for other black artists
