I watched Jui Jitsu the other day (lord knows why). It was terrible , and Cage was terrible in it.
There is a reason Cage is considered a joke by so many. He gives a lot of bad performances in a lot of bad movies. Sure he has talent, and has given several strong performances in his time, but that does not buy him a lifetime pass for consistently doing embarrassing work. Occasionally throwing in a good performance in an interesting film isn't enough to offset the sheer volume of bullshit he does.

Love their mention of Cage-fav book The Way of the Actor (of course I have a copy) - it's an interesting book, makes unique connections to acting and stranger performative traditions but I love it most bc of its access to actors and interviews - you'll get a Dirk Bogarde breakdown right before interviews with Rip Torn, Liv Ullmann, etc. Lotta Brando discussion too. Sometimes I think of some strange roles for Cage that amuses me - for example I had read once he wanted to play Vincent Mancini in The Godfather Part III or Coda or whatever it's called now and that would have been interesting and that was of course before Coppola cast Sofia which would have meant he wouldn't have cast Sofia so it's a good "what if" sort of thing.......I'm actually fascinated with the actors that Coppola considered for Vincent - Matt Dillon was one also. Also, if they could ever cast a younger Heat Cage could have played Vince Hanna ..........maybe opposite Sean Penn as McCauley in a Racing With The Moon regroup! .......Heat doesn't really work for recasting because no one had their iconography (that's why you CAN'T recast The Irishman either - with all due respect that Jon Bernthal thread was way off to me) but Cage/Penn would have worked a little as famous LA kids gone wrong in a way that were connected as friends in 1995 too...........basically I just think of Cage playing guys named Vince or Vincent it seems though

Garcia's fine (and I lol'd at his ear-flick to Zaza on my Coda watch) but Cage would've been great, next to Sciorra maybe? Fire. I think Cage, against what many might think, is highly castable. I can see him straight and serious as Tom White in Flower Moon (my casting) , I can see him pulling off Joe Exotic , etc. Coppola (Tarantino too) have those casting lists that I think about often too - Peter Falk's Sonny, just to see him act with Pacino, madone.

Sean Penn was more or less one of the main instigators in trashing Cage's reputation as an actor (well before he fully deserved it to be trashed, which it does now, I might add) way back in the late 90's/early 2000's www.cinema.com/news/item/3857/nicolas-cage-hits-back-at-sean-penns-criticism.phtmlBoth Cage and Penn were massively overrated actors (though maybe not these days, as they are both no longer rated as highly as they once were) whose careers plataued a long time ago and aren't at the top of casting lists for top filmmakers and projects any longer, but Penn in particular I lost a huge amount of respect for, the way he attacked Cage as an actor in the press (and they were supposed to be friends). As much as Cage seems willing to work on anything that will pay him, I think he'd probably prefer to walk over broken glass than work with Sean Penn again. Penn's attack really shook him. Probably a good thing though....with Penn and Cage at this stage of their careers, the likely feast of overacting ham we'd get from both of them in the same movie would probably put the Razzies on high alert

Cage does do alot of crap, but I'll always love his gnarliest work and what he represents. For one, he took unhinged to levels never before seen (or after, for that matter, though the Keitel of Bad Lieutenant is up there). Sean Penn has done some good work, but might be the most overrated good actor of the past 35 years, Cate Blanchett excepted.

I'm on the fence here. I've been a Cage-hater but I've also been Cage-curious, and this kind of Spooktober culty trashy jam looks like exactly the right place for him. I mean, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers was a shitty movie too but that didn't stop me from enjoying every cheesy, blood-soaked, glorious, godawful minute of it There's a time and place for trash.

First review - The Guardian - 2 / 5: www.theguardian.com/film/2021/feb/10/willys-wonderland-review-nicolas-cage-horror-filmThere will be sniggering once word gets out about this ridiculous horror film featuring a former kids’ birthday venue/game arcade occupied by evil, life-size animatronic puppets. However, to its credit, the film doesn’t take itself in the slightest bit seriously, because with a premise like that, really how could it? Especially when it has Nicolas Cage, uncharacteristically silent in a dialogue-free role, starring as a bad-ass drifter tricked into spending a night cleaning the haunted premises but proving to be a worthy opponent of the malevolent mechanical creatures.

Dropping pretty fast now, 58% off 19, can't imagine this ends up FRESH or even 50% but you never know....this is becoming the trend now of films starting strong, then dropping and trying to balance all these small time critics who give a lot of iffy films a pass and people who pile on a movie if it starts to go downhill. www.rottentomatoes.com/m/willys_wonderland

This movie kinda has to be seen to be believed. I genuinely believe that when Nicolas Cage showed up to set, they told him they ran out of money and couldn't pay him, so he decided to play pinball and drink no-name soda while some of the worst actors I've ever seen in a movie make some of the most boneheaded decisions in a horror film. Even the kills were unimpressive, which is a mortal sin in and of itself. I actually went to bed pissed off.
Groovy score, though.

I basically agree with this but the bizarreness of it all was pretty fun and Nicolas Cage is absolutely perfect. I was mostly disappointed in that it was only decent but could have been way way better. It'll probably still achieve some sort of cult status. I imagine this would have been a favorite back when I was a young stoner.

Yeah, it's Cage in a unique place where he basically has to rely on his physical presence and not his usual arsenal, but it really does squander him in an unfortunate way. No one else can do what he does, but this is such a colossal waste of his time.
