By the way, for those who didn't know - everything we see in the movie was built for it specifically, including the lighthouse itself. There's so much overreactive hype about the Parasite house and street being built for the movie and about the recreation of the The Sistine Chapel in The Two Popes that I feel it's necessary to point out that the same incredible thing was done for The Lighthouse too. YES. THANK YOU. An error we must rectify come AMARA season Not to take away from Parasite's production design, but The Lighthouse absolutely deserves more love in the category.

An earthshaking depiction of resentment, camaraderie and madness. The black-and-white, 1.19:1 aspect ratio style is a perfect fit for such a haunting, gothic story, proving that Eggers is one of the emerging masters of modern cinema. Both Dafoe and Pattinson continue their current hot-streaks with performances that are both larger-than-life and deeply nuanced. The Lighthouse is scary, funny and ferocious - another of 2019's growing number of masterpieces. 10/10 (my third for the year! 2019 has been a great close to the decade, movie-wise)

Great cinematography and PD, very good performances and direction and a good film. Not a great one imo.
The way the two leads played off each other was amazing, so were some specific scenes. I can definitely see why many people love it but it's not a movie for everyone to love and certainly not my cup of tea.

A little torn on where I stand on this one. Pattinson's character never felt defined, and that made some of the I'M GOIN CRAAAAZY scenes come off in a way that didn't quite land, which sucks, because that's...a lot of the movie. But maybe I'm just not reading this part right. My other complaint - and I'm honestly not sure if this was intentional - is what in the actual fuck was going on with his accent in this? Extremely all over the place, and that sort of thing rarely bothers me at all.
On the other hand, the atmosphere is super cool, and Dafoe is ridiculously good! Like, #1 performance of the year level good. His "HAAAARK!" speech is one of the best things he's ever done. Pretty much all of his rambling diatribes cracked me up and were really well written.
So, have to dwell on it a bit.
Can't shake the feeling though that if Guy Maddin directed this it would've been a masterpiece.
edit - also think approaching this thing from primarily a bizarre comedic perspective makes it work better. I enjoy it more looking at it that way.

The writing is a bit rough and the story didn't really evolve as much as i wished. That said this is a splendid display of craftsmanship from Robert Eggers. He has mastered visual storytelling and that overcomes the shortcoming in his writing. Stunning black and white cinematography filled with nightmarish visuals and the innovative sound design perfectly evokes the madness and isolation at sea.
Pattinson and Dafoe were brilliant and i'm honestly baffled that Dafoe isn't winning awards left and right.
I'm ending this year and the decade on a great note- 8/10

I loved the atmosphere and generally gritty feel it gaves you. I adored the performances by Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe and I absolutely dig the cinematography. There are many aspects of the film to respect and appreciate however I wasnt nailed by the story or even storytelling. It has a very Bergman-ish style with it that often did not connect to me in the past and does not here. However the film has many strengths. OF course the on screen duo who really both demand the screen. Out of the two performances I slightly prefer Willem Dafoe. The reason is that you would expect greatness from him but he even topped those expectations. He truly commanded the screen and played his role with such a fascinating enthusiasm. Robert Pattinson is also fantastic. He more and more grows into one of the most interesting actors of his career. The magic in his performance lies in the fact that he slowly and slowly shows what he is capable of while Dafoe is a force of nature from the first time he opens his mouth on screen. Both a brilliant and so is the realistic look and feel the film portrays. I loved that it was in black & white and cannot even imagine what different effect it would have had in color. Still I wasnt too focused on the story but I guess thats a too subjective opinion. In general the film is a piece of art - and art is subjective.
Current Nominations:
Best Actor in a Leading Role: Robert Pattinson Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Willem Dafoe* Best Cinematography Best Sound
Rating: 7/10

Sorry guys, but this was fucking excruciating for me.
Dafoe kept me awake and the cinematography and sound design were interesting... but the positives end there. I really tried to get into it... but it just never happened.
I'd spend more time trashing it, but life's too short and I already just wasted 109 minutes of it.

This premiered yesterday in my country, but... only in two theater rooms, and not a single one in my city (and I live in the second largest city). I'm honestly kind of shocked, it's not like the actors are complete unknowns... Guess I'll have to stick with screeners for this one. Are there any good ones out there? If you know any, please PM me.

I recently watched The Lighthouse and I noticed Willem Defoe' s character speaks a dialect that resembles my own. I'm from the South East coast of Ireland and he sounded lik e a lot of auld lads I've worked with. Even his mannerisms resemble a few folk down here. I'd use phrases like "yer" and "laddie". Just something that I thought I'd share

A lot of people in the Downeast area/Atlantic provinces of Canada and upper New England have a similar dialect in certain regions, and as many of them hail from Ireland originally, it makes sense. Sarah Orne Jewett was a particular source of inspiration for the Eggers brothers when they were writing it.
