I loved it. May be another all-timer from Eggers in my book. Dafoe should be a serious awards contender.
Your thoughts?

I loved it. May be another all-timer from Eggers in my book. Dafoe should be a serious awards contender. Your thoughts? I just saw this tonight, and I don't if I loved it but I really did like it a lot. I agree about Dafoe, but I think the movie might be too weird for most award bodies. He was great though along with the direction, cinematography, sound design, production design, and of course Robert Pattinson too. I know that many here will love the film, their performances especially pacinoyes and stephen in particular. I'll have to read more about it because I just knew the bare bones of it, but I don't know if I'm reading too much into it or not. Like I think that maybe some of it was a dream or rather hallucination is the better word, and when "Winslow" fell from painting, everything else after that was just in his mind.
Or if I'm giving too much meaning to the light, and "Winslow" obsession with it until he finally gets to see it up close. Anyhow it was a fun film. I wish my hearing was better or that I saw close captioning version because I have a feeling maybe I would have liked it even more because sometimes Dafoe's accent was really thick for me to decipher all of what he was saying.

I would pay for a Youtube video of Dafoe singing sea shanties in the shower while explaining the mythology behind mermaids. He could make a whole channel out of it: Willem Dafoe teaches things in the shower.

7.5+.......but not an 8. Willem Dafoe is arguably THE best American actor in his 60s, or the 80s generation, whatever you call it - the Hanks/Washington/Bridges/Spacey batch. In "The Lighthouse" he is a blast as well as a......um......it's hard to say because the movie plays fast and loose with reality, fiction, the reliability of the main character (Robert Pattinson, matching him gesture by gesture). The tech specs are fantastic - gorgeous compositions, sound design, cinematography that goes beyond "picture like" and almost is an evocation of a whole netherworld. The problem is, unlike The Witch which took its premise all the way (and was better imo), The Lighthouse has no real place for its premise to build to - it repeats, doubles back, hints at something else and then ends. Still it does that memorably - Dafoe in one scene, a speech after his cooking is insulted (!) and Pattinson in the "liar" scene, are memorably etched but even they are boxed in - are these "great" performances or are they great sketches in service to this cinematic stunt? People who think this has Oscar aspirations .......well, good luck because this is far outside of "baity" as anything I can think of tbh Side note - Both actors accents are all over the place imo - I guess you could disagree but, to me it doesn't matter at all, so do with that info whatever you like but this would be exhibit A in accents are meaningless imo.

I was so bored through almost all of this. What is the damn point of making a movie like this? You won't get rich or a huge following. You won't be respected like the auteurs being poorly aped (Bergman, Lynch, etc.). What is the point? Either come up with a goddamn story and test your mettle, or do gallery installation videos for MoMA or whatever. I'm so sick of this stuff.

It’s a lot to process but one thing I know for sure is that this might have the best fart jokes in cinematic history.

I found this completely fascinating, a feast of visuals and soundscape, and though the script comes across a little erratic and hazy, the performances pick up its slack. 7.5/10. I pretty much agree with pacinoyes great review - except while I found Pattinson quite good (and I'm a big fan) I was blown away by Dafoe. He's probably my Lead win for the year so far. Frowzy and dogmatic, a daring perf too - he's in his mid 60s and asked to play a slew of craggy, physical scenes. He's captivating and, though not entirely on Eggers mind, convincing too I thought. There are some hilarious, tender moments and later plays with our notion of his intentions ("Help me...to recollect") - often switching between being roaringly prophetic and sort of pathetic - and you better like his lobster! Bc the Pattinson character is less defined his perf feels a little erratic too and while that plays to the effect intentionally it also left less of an impression on me next to Dafoe whose horsepower stays with you. Having said that, Pattinson is the pivot to this psychodrama - it's his exhausted labor, sexual frustration, and buried guilt that together makes chaos of his sanity and identity and rejects the seafaring myths that Dafoe so abides. Their relationship, even just some of the rhythms of the movie, reminded me of PTA/The Master and the "landless latitude" PSH monologue. Quell and Winslow are both "dogs" - they can be trained, but like a thaumatrope, with its spinning illusion... stress can do that too and make a rabid prison of circumstance. Other thoughts: loved the beginning, the booming foghorn, and the gif above that is made meaningful and slightly ominous by what they're looking at. Almost reminded me of Shutter Island. And other stuff, which Eggers has mentioned in interviews - Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Fritz Lang, Bela Tarr ("We were living the Tarr misery"). Also for those who've seen the movie, some add-ons for fun - check out the 1801 Smalls Lighthouse incident, and this Silent short film from 2011 called The Lighthouse Keepers that shares some style flourishes (video in spoilers).

It's pretty good, but I prefer the works of the two directors it reminded me of most: Guy Maddin and FJ Ossang. It takes longer than I would like for it to find its groove, but once it gets going it's easy to forget what didn't work for me before it.

As an experimental film, this ticks all the boxes. Eggers clearly had a vision and never deters from it for a second. But he needs to dial back a bit for his upcoming Viking project and to keep it more elemental. The guy clearly has talent and I really do admire his imagination. It’s just that sometimes less is more, and he displayed that with “The VVitch”. He’s got a firm grasp on how to create an unsettling atmosphere and I think it would have served this film better had he not convoluted the story as much
There is so much to admire here (cinematography, acting, sound) but I can’t help but think it was also a missed opportunity in some regards.
7/10

Checked a lot of boxes for me: mainly one location, descent into madness/cabin fever, gorgeous cinematography, fighting about someone's cooking, jizz. Had a great time.

Fair enough. Maybe The Lighthouse will be more quotable to the couple dozen arthouse cinema denizens that actually watch it, but all I'm seeing right now on Twitter are people dropping Put Yo Weight On It and Dolemite Is My Name, and fuckin up motherfuckers is my game (or some variation therof). I think you need more of an audience than The Lighthouse is ever going to get to be the most quotable movie of the year, but your milage may vary.

Yup this is my favorite movie of the year so far. Still haven't seen most of the buzzed movies but one of them has to be really brilliant for this not to be #1 of the year for me. Just wow. The last time 2 Male acting duos have been this good together was Phoenix and PSH in The Master. I mean this is essentially like the best episode of Twilight Zone but made into a movie. That's the best way I can describe this really.
And yeah if somehow people weren't convinced that Pattinson is a really fcking talented actor by watching Good Time, this movie should do the job.
