Well, it's the same old story with Mann. Delayed productions - Originally wanted to do it, but the project finds a way to not work out for some reason.

Interesting. I feel like this is more in Refn's wheelhouse, especially lately, but if Mann can pick up Darius Khondji, there's potential for magic here. Ansel Elgort does not inspire excitement, but Watanabe will always get my attention.

Hype
Shame some folks will bash this sight unseen just because of Elgort’s involvement.

I’m looking forward to watching, but… is that a Yorkshire terrier living on top of Ansel’s head?

Really dug the first ep.... Mann directs it very sharply, gives it a great pulse.

Quite digging this thru the first 3 episodes. I historically do not care for Elgort as an actor but have to admit he works really well in this. Wish Mann directed more episodes but I’m just greedy for more Mann.

The directorial mystique obviously goes out the window after the pilot... but despite that, the season still mostly slaps. The Tokyo setting comes across spectacularly, and there's plenty of kino Yakuza moments and great characters. Obviously, I wish Mann directed all of it... but even 57 measly minutes of new Mann content after all these years was nearly cathartic for me.
Elgort is of course... Elgort... but he's not nearly ruinous. And though part of me wishes they'd just ditch the gaijin completely, the American reporter angle does make this a more intriguing show (even if the real Adelstein was something of a fraud, lol). And even then, the other whitey (Samantha) becomes the most boring/pointless/taking valuable time away from actually great characters character as the season progressed. Feels like she probably got more screentime than Ken Watanabe, which is criminal.
though of course, Watanabe is awesome. As well as Shô Kasamatsu, Hideaki Itô, Ayumi Tanida... and especially Shun Sugata as the ice cold Ishida. That moment where he takes on two assassins singlehandedly... legendarily badass.
hoping this gets renewed for a second season... otherwise it was almost just a tease.

I was digging the show and it just...stopped. Ridiculous. No story threads were finished. How does anyone think ending a show like that is okay?

They are obviously planning for a season 2. And it will be a crime if they don't get it.

Damn, this turned out to be really good even if it too many plot points were crammed into the finale. Shame if it doesn't get renewed.

I thought S1 was alright. The pilot is the peak...and then it's like the chef left and the line cooks had to make do. Elgort is better earlier, as the running-around doof in overdrive, but I don't buy that the yakuza chief and the veteran detective would give him the time of day. Some of it's just ridiculous....Having an affair with the rival yakuza's girl? The meth scene??
Not very plausible, runs in circles, doesn't resolve much by the end. But at the same time I enjoy journalist thrillers and foreigner abroad stuff, and some of the supporting actors, both yakuza bosses....are intense and add gravity when needed.

In my mind, it was Taron Egerton cast as the lead. Sigh. I tried to give Elgort a fair shot, and he works in some aspects (good cast chemistry and "bro-y" dynamic with all the other male characters). But I really do think Egerton could have captured the charisma, out-of-place vibe, cool confidence, and imo is overall a more expressive actor. The scenes where Elgort is trying to sympathize with families of a victim ring so false, it feels like he cut up an onion and is one step away from a meltdown regardless of the situation.
The pilot was great, along with the first 3 episodes but somewhere along the 4th episode and beyond, the writing and direction slipped and it felt melodramatic. I hate that they switched to largely English because the characters at the newspaper feel much less authentic that way (especially Rinko Kichuri, although i'm coming to realize i may just not like her as an actress)
