Watching S4E6 of Bojack Horseman- Stupid Piece of Sh*t- and the opening scene before the intro with his inner monologue is so perfect in so many ways to me.
What do you think are some of the all-time greatest pre-intro scenes in TV shows?

Breaking Bad is the king of the cold open imo.

What do you think are some of the all-time greatest pre-intro scenes in TV shows? This is a fantastic example of a great cold open (but also, literally any post on this forum praising Bojack will get an upvote from me) and this show does them very, very well. Another one of my favorites off the top of my head is the "Horse With No Name" montage sequence in one of my favorite episodes "The Old Sugarman Place" (4x02), the show doesn't really have a lot of moments like that but that one works beautifully. The Butterscotch cold open that kicks off "Free Churro" is another obvious classic. But like I said, many, many great ones in that show.

Breaking Bad is the king of the cold open imo. Any particular episodes? Do you need context to appreciate them or do they make sense standalone?

Do you need context to appreciate them or do they make sense standalone? 2x01, 2x04, 2x10 and 2x13 is a good example of the Breaking Bad cold open as they work together to form an end of season tease. Also 5x14 has like a 20 minute cold open and its some of the best stuff of the show (but you 100% need context for this one).

^Always Sunny is another series that's pretty obviously expert at this. Here's an obvious favorite that comes to mind ... one of the most iconic moments of the show really ... you can watch it totally out of context and it's still hilarious in its own right ...
