1. Haynes 2. Linklater 3. Baumbach 4. Lonergan
Linklater has the best work of the four with the Before trilogy, and while he’s kinda inconsistent outside of that I do think he has the most distinct voice of this group and is probably the most important to cinema as a whole. Haynes takes the top spot for me though for the sake of personal preference ... I haven’t seen all of his stuff but I’ve yet to dislike anything he’s done (that Ruffalo docudrama thing whose title I’ve already forgotten looks like it’s aiming to change that, though) and his style generally plays to all my sensibilities. Baumbach I’ve also liked all that I’ve seen from him but he’s not distinct enough to be among my favorites or anything. Lonergan is comfortably fourth for me.

1. Baumbach Don't love everything he's made but a consistent and unique voice. Love how he tackles family dysfunction with razor sharp wit and poignancy. Squid and the Whale is one of my favorite films, a perfect blend of pitch-black cringe humor, French New Wave whimsy, and genuine exploration of trauma, dysfunction, and how sons inherit the sins of their pretentious sexist fathers.
2. Haynes A bit mixed on Haynes because I love half his filmography and have no interest in the other half, but he has at least two masterpieces in Safe (a stomach-churning depiction of mental decline), and Far from Heaven (beautiful Sirk-inspired melodrama both sensitive and subversive), and Carol was pretty great too.
3. Lonergan Hard to rank this guy because I haven't seen Margaret yet, but You Can Count on Me and Manchester are both intimate and devastating portraits of broken people in broken families. Can't wait for his next project, whenever the hell that is.
4. Linklater He for me is the least consistent filmmaker among these four, at least the least consistently quality. There's the Before Trilogy and then there's everything else.

Have only seen one film from each so at this point I might as well just be ranking the 4 separate movies:
1. Manchester By the Sea (Lonergan) 2. Boyhood (Linklater) 3. Frances Ha (Baumbach) 4. Far From Heaven (Haynes)

1. linklater 2. lonergan 3. haynes 4. baumbach
it's a bit hard to assess Lonergan in comparison to the others since the guy has only directed 3 movies, as great as all 3 are...
anyways, I like all 4 of them though Baumbach is the most hit-or-miss.

Not a huge personal fan of any of these but Linklater and Haynes have done some really good work when they're at their best and Baumbach is a solid writer at least. Lonergan's movies just seem like dull dirges to me.
