I could see this forum mostly indifferent or not liking it and I could understand why, but for some reason I really loved it by the end. I think it takes awhile for everything to click into place, and before the last third, there were quite a few times that I felt that Zellweger was either doing a Garland impersonation and not really disappearing in the role, or letting her pursed lips do all the acting for her similar to how I felt Rami Malek's fake teeth did most of the acting for him in BR last year.
However, once it reaches the last third, I was just hooked. Maybe because Garland reminded me of my own mom in some ways, or people in my life who've struggled with wanting the best for their kids and doing the best that they can. I'm not sure what it was, but I thought Zellweger was absolutely magical in that part of the film.
I was skeptical about her winning a second Oscar since she's taken a long break from the industry, and she didn't do much after her first Oscar win, but I'm not sure I see anyone being able to beat her because even though I thought her performance was inconsistent, I think people are definitely going to remember the last part of the film where she soars. Plus I can't see another Best Actress contender having such a powerful ending for their character.

Im pretty skeptical on a lot of the story in comparison to real events (there are MANY Darkest Hour-London Underground moments) but it was a lovely movie overall and Zellwegger.... I think she’s winning. All I really need to see is Johansson in Marriage Story to compare but Zellwegger is gonna be practically unbeatable especially given the fact she’s probably gonna campaign far more successfully than Johansson and she’s gonna have virtually no backlash. If I were betting money now, what I just saw was a winning performance.

It took me a little while to get engaged in the story, but once Garland was in London, I just started to adore the rest of the film. Renee is fantastic, and it's a wonderful near one-woman show. The physical transformation she goes through in the film is remarkable, as is her singing. By the end of the film when she gave her last performance, I was in tears. I think it helps that they really explored the darkness in Garland's backstory. You could really tell she was bitter and withered in the film, and Zellwegger's performance help tremendously too.
If she doesn't win an Oscar, it's damn near close. There are so many "big moments" in the film that just scream "academy!"

Pretty much your bog standard biopic elevated by an amazing lead performance by Renée.
However, I think the inclusion of the gay couple was a really nice touch that I thought was very well handled.

If you only see one movie this year with a one word title beginning with a J about a person fucked up in the head by childhood trauma then make it this one.

I enjoyed the gay couple, as it wasn't just a representation of how Judy was an early celebrity supporting the gay community when that just wasn't happening publicly at the time, but also how Judy would just make up stories about her interactions with fans over time. She always had a long anecdote that sounded real but then she would admit she made it up.
I credit a lot of the performance to the makeup department tbh. Zellweger isn't bad at all and deserves a nomination, but her winning for this just feels like a long shot, especially after they just handed an Oscar out for a musical biopic last year.

Zellweger is incredible in this. The film itself is very solid (waaay better than Bohemian Rhapsody, slightly above Rocketman), but she's the one thing that truly stands out - she'd make for a brilliant winner.

It’s a pretty boilerplate slice-of-Tinseltown-life that is elevated by an immersive, mesmerizing turn from Zellweger. It’s classily shot and solidly acted around Zellweger (Jessie Buckley <3) , but it’s Renee’s movie from start to finish. Admittedly, she has to contend with some mighty melodrama, but it wouldn’t be a Judy Garland movie without it.

Buckley is a bit wasted here, she is good and has a really charm presence, but she doesn’t really have a character other than to show up and saying basic things.

I expected it to be one of those ' totally carried by their lead' kind of biopics but to my surprise it's the actual movie that I ended up liking quite a bit, not just the performance. Zellweger is indeed very good here although I wanted to be a little bit more impressed but at the end of the day the film itself resonated with me more than anything. Moving and appropriately sorrowful, the movie is also quite well-made and only occasionally suffers from the typical biopic banalities. The worst case being the very ending where a perfectly touching performance of 'Over the Rainbow' is kind of ruined by a ridiculous scene of the "Darkest Hour" variety. As far as these biopics go, this is definitely a good example of how to at least try to do them right.
