What are we thinking here, mates?
- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - Even though some franchises do suffer the curse of the last film being snubbed in this category ("Revenge of the Sith", "The Battle of the Five Armies"), I don't think it's gonna happen here. The movie feels pretty safe for a nomination. I don't even think the dubious "Star Wars" fatigue will be a factor here.
- Ad Astra - Prestige space movies tend to make it in here most of the time.
- Avengers: Endgame - The biggest blockbuster of the year with tons of effects, some of them invisible yet prominent.
- Gemini Man - I kinda suspect that this will be the big de-aging contender here and not "The Irishman". All the featurettes already emphasize the fact that they didn't just de-age Smith but built an entirely digital human for this movie which is a pretty big deal. I suspect they'll try to pimp out the technical innovations of the movie hard for the voters. A good reel at the bakeoff should assure its nomination here.
- The Lion King - I guess there's a hindrance of being entirely animated but I still think that voters will look at it as a supposed 'live action' movie and will definitely appreciate the detailed CGI.
As for the other contenders, there's obviously the aforementioned Scorsese gargantuan which will have a very strong shot.
I guess Marvel can end up with two movies here with either "Far from Home" or "Captain Marvel" joining "Endgame". I guess "FFH" has a better chance with its illusion stuff and the general quality of the effects being stronger but "Captain Marvel" has some nice de-aging too (seems to be one of the themes of the year in this category).
There're also movies like "Alita", "Midway", "Pokemon" and so on which are very CG-heavy too and which will probably be in the conversation.
And then there's "CATS"
