Costas Gavras' new film about the negotiations in 2015 between Greece and EU concerning Greece's debt is based on the titular book of Yanis Varoufakis, who was Greece's minister of finance during that period. The film looks pretty good and is definitely among the most anticipated for me this year, as Costas Gavras has proven that he is definitely a master of political films. Here is the trailer:

I saw the trailer yesterday.
If anything, Gavras can do political movies better than almost everybody.
The lead actor, Christos Loulis, seems to me he's nailing it in the role of Varoufakis. All his mannerisms, his movements, the way he speaks. Everything is there.

Costa-Gavras is back! This looks really interesting and reminiscent of last year's The Realm with its cast of what seems to exclusively be powerful stressed-out white men in suits with the fate of millions at their fingertips. My kind of movie.
And apparently it's playing at Venice? Interesting to see the feedback.

It's so long that I have heard something about Costa-Gavras, that I actually thought he had ended his career. Good to see, this isn't the case!
While I prefer his early work by much this surely is a movie that can turn out to be interesting.

While I prefer his early work by much this surely is a movie that can turn out to be interesting. He hadn't made a movie for seven years. That plus his age made many people think he was semi-retired, which was not a total lie. Imo, if it wasn't for Greece's financial crisis and the resulting political instability, maybe he wouldn't have made another film.
