Started of as a wickedly funny film and turned into a suspense thriller and ended up as a bleak portrait on social disparity. Such a layered work from director Bong Joon Ho. There are so many brilliantly executed scenes in there that it's just impossible to not give it repeated viewings. The set design is pretty great and fits to the script's needs. All the actors did a splendid job but the actress who played Mrs. Park is my favorite.
The first half of the film is just perfect and while later half though not on the same level is great too. That final shot is haunting. Little to complain here apart from minor plot contrivances. Movie of the year and also my first- 9/10

Some of the plot beats came off a bit overly calculated for my tastes - too close to bordering on contrived a few times - but I mostly don't mind as the real draw here is clearly the political ideas Bong's conveying, which do pack a punch by the end. So while I did like it and do readily acknowledge my taste in movies rarely coincides with the general consensus, I'm still more than a little baffled by how incredibly beloved this is - seems to be the highest rated film of all time on Letterboxd right now - hmm.

Finally watched this. I'm always wary of stuff with this kind of universal acclaim tbh... this is one of those times where the acclaim is justified. ( Mother is my #1 of 2009 so maybe I should've been less skeptical). Spectacular jigsaw-puzzle-satire on morbid capitalist culture, with trespassing as the (delicious) central concept. As always with Bong, events that pass for “plot twist” actually serve as shocking truths. You can read the film as a struggle for some vital breathing space. Movie's been architecturally thought out, from the cramped to the spacious. Astutely, the poor family are painted as smart, wily and practical; also a little vulgar, which they have a right to be. They have positively no respect for anybody; respect is a commodity. The rich have room for relaxation and time for good manners; pretense and affectation have made them careless and more than a little stupid. What’s more, the poor have spent their whole lives consuming the lives of the well-off through TV, cell phones, etc, accounting for their astounding gift for role-playing. (They’re natural-born actors). The rich, crucially, become the poor’s entertainment; they’re also what gets them hooked. There's far more than just cleverness to this movie though. Most unnerving of all is the nauseating familiarity between the 2 groups. The scene where the Parks have couch sex in the living room while Mr. Kim listens furtively alongside his children, trying to hide his smell, horrifyingly aware of his position. It’s the culmination of the Kims’ debasement. It’s also suggestive of the larger incestuous link between the families--the primal biology behind this entire rite, a seediness that’s always lurking. Genius comic touches throughout: the rich mother making a cult of her son; cell phones likened to North Korean missiles; idiosyncratic banana-chewing and more. Scenes become richer in retrospect (the party during the thunderstorm). And there’s a disturbance throughout: the constant curveball, the threat of something neither party can see. It’s miraculous how a film of this nature can carry the emotional effect that it does. The despondency of Song Kang-Ho, his driftless despair, is heartbreaking. He just gives in. An instant classic... a distinct original for our times. Adored it

Finally watched this and I kinda loved it. Somehow managed to go in completely blind to any plot details or anything at all. What a great experience this was. Like others have mentioned, I had a few qualms with some plot points or forgotten ones...but I can quite easily overlook that. I’ve only ever previously seen Snowpiercer and Okja from Bong Joon Ho, I think I definitely need to check out some of his older filmography. Open to recommendations.

Yeah, everyone who said that a re-watch of this was crucial is absolutely right. It's been five days since I went and saw it again, and I can't get it off my mind. I really, really loved it on a first viewing, but on a second viewing it surged ahead to masterpiece-level for me. Some things that especially stood out to me on a repeat viewing: a.) the editing, which is absolutely brilliant, not just for its pitch-perfect montages (Nerdwriter put out a great video about this the other day that I can't recommend enough), but for its smaller moments of genius -- thinking particularly of the scene where Moon-gwang and her husband are threatening to send the video of the Kims, then we get the flashback of the two of them enjoying the living room of the house before the Kims jump on them and take the phone, and there's a shot of the couple still in the flashback where they look in the direction of the Kims right before it cuts back to the Kims charging towards them, such a brilliant way to capture the sensation of getting distracted/lost in thought and then being caught totally off-guard ; I loved this moment the first time too but wanted to highlight it specifically; b.) the score, which I did not at all appreciate enough on a first viewing, but it's phenomenal and just really rounds-out the experience of the whole thing; c.) Song Kang-ho's performance, which I loved the first time but his brilliance resonated more with me on a rewatch. I think Viced had previously highlighted the moment where they are hiding under the table and there's this one shot of Ki-taek lying there with his eyes closed, and somehow Song is able to convey the character's complex emotional response to that moment not only without saying a word but without even opening his eyes, and it's absolutely fucking brilliant and I don't know how he even pulls off so many moments like that. I still maybe have a few minor nitpicks, but the more I think about them, the more I find myself not at all bothered by them. Think I may have another film to add to my "perfect films of the decade" list ... it's top 10 of the '10s material, and maybe the film from this year that I'll be obsessively rewatching the most for years to come. While a lot of the greatness of a first viewing comes from the thrill of having absolutely no idea where it's going and what to expect, it's somehow even better watching it knowing exactly where it's headed. Truly masterful filmmaking that offers endless discussion...

Seen it a couple of times now and it's wonderful. I'm shocked that the Birthday Party is the highlight for a lot of people, I share Viced 's thoughts on it, might be my least favorite part of the flick. But that is like saying a hand job is a least favorite sexual encounter. It's pretty exquisite from top to bottom. I'll add that it's profoundly funny and because it's a Korean joint entirely bleak in it's conclusion. Bong balances and shifts it's tones and statements expertly. 9/10

Saw this back around Halloween. Didn't care for it. I somewhat enjoyed the earlier portion of the movie where each family member was brought into the situation, as there was certainly a deftness to Bong's direction and relish in their wickedness, but I found everything that followed pretty purposeless, in no small part because of the lack of any character development driving the narrative. It set up a tense scenario and then torched it with protracted chaos. During the last 40 or so minutes, I was just ready for it to end. As far as recent South Korean acclaimed films go, I think The Handmaiden is vastly superior.

It only came out in the UK on Friday, so went to see it this afternoon. Usually when films are so hyped up, I end up thinking they weren't that great, but Parasite was fantastic. Definitely the best film of the last year and deserved Best Picture winner. Come on Academy, don't vote for the boring same old, same old.

I was already thinking that many people on this board were drastically overestimating its chances at a BP nomination, and now that I've seen, I'm even more convinced that there is absolutely no way in hell this is getting nominated for Best Picture. And if that's a really bold prediction then I guess that's my bold prediction for the year because nope nope nope absolutely no way in hell.) BITCH YOU THOUGHT
