Which of these films do you personally prefer?

Minghella's film is overall better, except that I just don't like Matt Damon in the role, so that takes it down a crucial peg or two. Delon kicks his ass six ways from Sunday.

I overall don't care much for Damon.

No, I find him too uninteresting as an actor for me to feel like watching him play this part. I overall don't care much for Damon. Now see, I didn't care much for pre-2010s DiCaprio, but in 1999, he would've been a really fascinating fit for that character.

I've never watched Purple Moon but TTMR is one of my all time favourite films.Damon is perfect as Ripley,it's his best ever performance imo.Jude Law was at peak hotness.

This story rests on the power of Ripley, and Delon is jaw-dropping. 1960 a thousand times over, although Minghella's film certainly isn't bad.

I haven't seen Purple Noon but I can't imagine Delon being worse than Damon as Damon was such a horrible miscast.
The other aspects of Ripley were great though. Namely Blanchett, Law, and the underrated Paltrow. This film is also their physical peaks. All of them looked damn good.

Having now seen Purple Noon which I really liked, I'm definitely going for The Talented Mr. Ripley. The cast of TMR is better although I loved Damon and Delon(WOW!!) pretty much the same and also the fact that the sexual tension between Greenleaf and Ripley was totally missing in the 60's version. They instead have Tom go for Marge? Not acceptable! And Jude Law >>>

1999
@tyler I think Delon would have made a smashing Dickie Greenleaf too. I actually think that Law looks a lot like a young Delon in the 1999 version.
