Clearly The Irishman makes you immediately think if there are any rivals to compare in that film it's these 2.
Um......
Pesci of course is bigger in some ways - an Oscar does that and smaller in other ways - Keitel having a more deeper film career imo - but maybe you disagree. So who do you think is the better actor?
Not so much who will be better in The Irishman ..........because clearly if there's a performance to watch in that film .........it's Anna Paquin.
Um.......

I love Joe, but he’s just not capable of something like Fingers or Bad Lieutenant.

I love Keitel to death, but The Pesh is one of the most watchable actors of all time.

Both had the opportunity to work with Scorsese early on their careers (and Marty's early career too) and became frequent collaborators of him.
They've been in great films but I think Keitel has been in more I like than Pesci has. On the other hand, Joe's movies with Scorsese are much better than the ones Keitel did imo.
In terms of performances, what Harvey did in Mean Streets, BL and Who's That Knocking on my Door, Joe never did in any of his movies.
Maybe he has higher heights as an actor/ talent. But of course, Pesci's scene presence in Casino and Goodfellas was dynamite!!! A real pleasure to watch.
Oh, I dunno!! Maybe I give it some serious thought before choosing one of them!!

Both are great actors, but I definitely prefer Keitel and it's not only because of his performance in Bad Lieutenant, which is the best performance either of them have done. Keitel has also delivered several understated performances which I found absolutely fantastic (in Smoke, Ulysses' Gaze and Youth for instance), which I think are on par with Pesci's best work.

I finally voted for Keitel as I think he's a better actor. Although some times Pesci is the bomb.

I just imagined Pesci in Keitel's role in The Piano.
That was really funny.
