In principle, I agree that an actor should be able to play any part given that they are qualified to achieve the essence of that part and even if they aren't then that would be a failure of acting rather than a failure of personal identity. However, that principle can only be invoked if it were applied universally, that a person of color or transgender individual hold the same freedom to play parts outside of their respective races or gender but that is almost never the case when the part is, for example, a white historical figure. I've yet to see a producer consider Laverne Cox for the part of Alexander the Great and such an idea would probably seem outright ludicrous if you were to seriously discuss it simply on the basis of race and gender, but Scarlett Johansson wants to play the part of Dante "Tex" Gill and be the white face of Ghost in the Shell without facing any such scrutiny, and that's the problem. Universal privilege to all parts should belong to all actors, not just white ones.

I started a thread once about "Whitewashing" and basically in that thread I said we're getting to the point where 2 of the roles that made Al Pacino's legend will one day be viewed as "he shouldn't have been allowed to play either role much less be considered "great" in either one (Scarface/Carlito's Way). In that thread me and stephen have (good-naturedly) argued over Olivier's Othello done in full blackface ..........and I'm on the Olivier side which basically is like the most unpopular position you can take on anything in 2019 So, I'm on team ScarJo on this - you be the best Oak you can be girl and I hope it will help you branch out (that's 1) and I'll stump ( 2!!) for you don't find anything shady about this (Um) and hope people leaf you alone (ducks, runs for cover)

Lots of actors can play a wooden piece. Nothing special.

Lots of actors can play a wooden piece. Nothing special. Well, Mark Wahlberg is ALWAYS playing like he's wooden, so no big deal
