Paddington 2 has to be the most recent example, not least because of Hugh Grant's scene-stealing tour de force performance.

Agreed on Paddington 2!
I do love the original, but Blade Runner 2049 qualifies here.
Also, the John Wick series and the Before trilogy, both of which have second and third installments that improve on already strong first films.

Yes, I know that I'm a massive nerd and the only person who will ever watch this, but once again I mention Madoka Magica: Rebellion. The original TV show was a masterpiece imo, but it left no place for a sequel. Well, it left the possibility open, but thematically I didn't see how it could be built on: everything the writer wanted to say had been said.
And then Rebellion happened. Instead of copying the original or trying to build on it, the movie made the gutsy move to function as an argument against the original. It takes everything the story stood for and fights against it, argues that everything the original used as a foundation for its philosophies is wrong. And as such it serves as a perfect second chapter to the tale I loved: it deconstructs the original and seeks to find ways to make it better.
Whether or not the solution the characters come to in Rebellion is better or worse than the one presented in the original is up to the viewer, but it takes an enormous amount of courage to take such a popular show (and Madoka Magica was a pretty titanic hit, topping Japanese public voting lists as "THE GREATEST ANIME OF ALL TIMEZ!!!111!!!!") and then fuck with its audience in this way, by deliberately making a sequel that spits on the original.
And in the process, making the original better, by making the viewer question their own thoughts and beliefs about what they loved about it.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (bigger, bolder & more badass). It features some of the most insane action sequences ever filmed, raised the stakes, much improved lead actress performance who wasn't a damsel in distress at all this time around and ahead the curb cgi/special effects.

It's fresh in my mind because I rewatched it a couple of days ago and I think it's a perfect example - Toy Story 2.
Less frantic and more measured in its pace than the first one, explores more thematic depths, is funnier, has a much stronger emotional side. It's everything a great sequel should be.

Hamlet 2 But really..... To get the horrors out of the way.... Evil Dead 2 a big one Paranormal Activty 3 I found legit scary and brings series narrative together Ouija Origin of Evil and Annabelle Creation two surprisingly good studio horrors that outwit their weak starting points The Exorcist III, bold take I like it better than the first, wouldn't change a frame from the first hour, strong GCS perf

Revenge of the Sith and every other SW film that came before it
the original is good but the last two Resident Evil films completely give new meaning to the first film

I don't know man, the first one's spookier and feels more naturally insane to me. The more outright comedic these got - as opposed to the "laughing because I can't stop screaming" vibe of the original - the less I enjoyed them.
