I absolutely love most of his work over the years(The Hurt Locker , The Town, Wind River, Kill the Messenger, The Immigrant, 12 & Holding etc etc) .
What I don't really care for are his performances in his 3 franchise outings (The Avengers, MI and The Bourne Legacy). Not saying he was "bad" in those franchises but he came across pretty uninteresting in all those franchises. Like he was just collecting a paycheck.
I can't help but think he is wasting his acting talent right now. I know he got a really late start to be a leading man in his mid to late 30s so he is probably trying to cash in at the moment. All he has in the works is that Disney+ Hawkeye streaming series (ugh) , a role in the Spawn reboot starring old ass Jamie Foxx (ugh) and some voice work role in some animated movie (ugh).
He was such an enigma in both The Hurt Locker & The Town (which led to well deserved Oscar noms). I'd like to him team up with some talented directors in the near future to showcase more of his skills.

Yeah, I think he's a damn fine actor and I actually do think he's a highlight in his franchise appearances.

Like you I can't blame him for cashing in right now, but I think he's been wasted in all of those franchises. Maybe because he had to fill in for Matt Damon, and his character compared to Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible and the other Avengers in the MCU films wasn't as flashy. I'm not sure because I think he's a great actor outside of those films, but I feel he has no charisma when he's in them. He really surprised me with Wind River though. I was resigned to accepting that he was just going to pretty much keep doing franchises and small films that went nowhere. So it was great that Wind River was a success for him, and if it weren't for the Weinstein scandal, he'd probably would have gotten his third Oscar nomination or at least been more of a factor during that season.

Pretty much the same as you. Wind River reminded me why I started liking the guy about 10 years ago now.

I haven't seen much of him, except his super hero films (and even not all of them).
I liked him in the Town and Hurt Locker and that is pretty much everything there is to it. Talented for sure but nothing really special imo.

Well his best work was pretty recent in Wind River... but sadly that got fuck-all in terms of award recognition (The Weinstein Company scandals were probably a big part of this)... so hopefully he has plenty more in the tank for us to see.
As for his franchise appearances, I feel he's getting the James Marsden paramour treatment and getting it snaked away from him before the end. In Avengers he's an afterthought (but really you have a god, a supersoldier, basically a transformer, a super soldier, and a god damn Hulk) because he just can't logically compete with the others (neither can Black Widow for that matter... WHICH IS WHY THEY NEEDED TO DO A SPY ACTION-THRILLER WITH THE TWO OF THESE!), in the MI series it looked like he was poised to take over the reins from Cruise... but Cruise is an immortal follower of Xenu, so that's not happening any time soon...
And of course Bourne wouldn't work without, you know, Bourne.

He's very underappreciated as an actual actor. In spite of his Oscar nomination, his performance in The Hurt Locker doesn't get enough love. He's so great playing a man broken because of seeing war first hand. I also agree with the consensus, that I think he would have been in contention for a best actor nomination for Wind River, had Weinstein not happened. He's fantastic in it. More recently I thought he was excellent in Endgame, where Hawkeye really gets to shine, and Renner doesn't disappoint.
I wish he would do comedy more. He was the highlight of Tag for me.

Renner kicks some serious ass in the MI movies. He and Baldwin were an amazing duo in Rogue Nation... if only the Avengers bullshit didn't keep him out of Fallout...

Totally wasted in MCU films imo but he's often strong, "The Town" is a personal favorite and he's also excellent in MI films, "Hurt Locker", "North Country" and "Wind River".

Oh honey, I heard he used so much eyeliner in The Immigrant that Marion had to keep going out and buying them and hiding them.... Allegedly the production bill for eyeliner almost closed the movie down... So many delays because during the shoot, the director would suddenly go, 'Where's Marion?'... And a cast member would answer, 'She's out buying eyeliner,' and everybody would look at Jeremy... There was no money left to market the movie!

yeah he's fine. Amazing in The Town, very good in The Hurt Locker and Wind River, but I'm blanking on anything else he's done apart from being the most useless avenger in the avengers

The thing is, he's quite good, but any area of film where he has worked (lead, support, action, drama, comedy), I can think of at least half a dozen or more of his contemporaries, who I can imagine or would prefer in his parts. I guess he's just forgettable, and in many ways that's worse than being bad.
I think I'd prefer him to stick to playing more grounded / everyman types in well made dramas (Wind River, Arrival etc), as he just isn't a strong enough presence for me to excel anywhere else.

I guess he's so forgettable that I forgot I was going to add a comment here after seeing Toy Story 4 last night that I had no idea what a Arctic Dogs was let alone that he was the voice of the main character of it. I didn't even recognize his voice either until the trailer went through the actor's names. Also Justice for Poms!!! This looked much worse than Poms to me, so I hope that Jacki Weaver and Rhea Pearlman get to do some gloating when it gets a lower MC/RT score, and maybe bombs at the box office. It's the only major animated release though between The Addams Family and Frozen II though, so it probably won't totally bomb like Poms.

Sort of OT: I actually think Renner has a good voice, but I've seen this tweet pop up on my timeline a few times today all with people clowning on it. I'm not sure if it's meant to be funny or not though, but hopefully he's in on the joke.
