What did you guys think of his performance ? I freakin' loved it . He portrays one of the most amazing and intriguing villains that I have ever seen in a movie. Such a chiling performance . His acting truly elevates this (already brilliant) film .100% deserved his oscar nomination .

He's quite brilliant and in his peak years he was an actor who excelled at a whole bunch of stuff other actors didn't even try - like he was the master of all these things that were uniquely his own - showing you how his mind worked, conveying a self-hatred, projecting a strange sort of logical vanity or arrogance, and a detachment in the way he used his body and how it contradicted from his thoughts (Of Mice and Men particularly).

Hell yeah I love his performance in that film! (also wasn't aware that he got a nom for it. very cool & well deserved!) . I remember being totally captivated by Malkovich in that film. That one scene at the lake where he kills those two duck hunters was cold blooded as hell

It's such a great entertaining villainous performance. He plays a demented psycho so well. I think his Oscar nomination for the film was quite inspiring.

As they've gotten less and less mainstream with their picks, probably not. That being said, they still go with occasionally "different" kinds of roles, especially from well-received fare that does well at the box office. Random example, but I never expected Stallone to get another Oscar nomination for example.

The academy has had some inspiring nominations in the past decade, but far less then say the 80's or 90's, since most of the nominations come from the best picture nominations now.

One of the best 90s villains in my opinion, a bit overshadowed by the other great villain performance in his category that year. Quite a tricky role to pull off too, but I'm glad his work was recognised as opposed to being left in the dark as just another villain performance in an action film. Your thoughts?

Definitely one of the best villain performances of the '90s... but what's not mentioned enough about that movie -- how great Clint is in it.

He's tremendous.
I've addressed him as an actor in that "Poetic Actors" thread - and when he's really on his game (here, Burn After Reading, Object of Beauty etc.) he puts things together in his characterizations in positively ingenious ways - far more detailed and thought out than many of his 80s peers. His slightly "off" line readings that accentuate humor but not predictably and not all the time either - the way he emphasizes certain words, the volume of his voice, vocal stammerings or hesitations, his body language, etc. - a lot of little things that he does to convey whatever he wants - intellect, madness, relentlessness etc. You really get the impression that he knows the scripts inside out because other actors would miss little curves in the text that he nails. Take any clip from that film, and you see him doing so much...
This entire movie wouldn't work without a major tour de force villain performance and it gets one. Unfortunately for him Fiennes is GOAT level that year but aside from that he's just aces.

Definitely one of my favorite villain performances of the 90s . Malkovich's approach to the role was brilliant (cold & calculated) . He was scary good in that film . I esp liked the scene at the lake where he offs those two hunters . Straight up cold blooded!
