Some trivia about casting. Parker originally wanted Robert De Niro to play the role of Harry Angel, but the actor expressed interest in making a cameo appearance as mysterious benefactor Louis Cyphre. De Niro however did not fully commit to the role until after frequent discussions with Parker. The director reflected, "I had been courting [De Niro] to play [Cyphre] in Angel Heart for some months and we had met a few times — and he had continued to bombard me with questions examining every dot and comma of my script. I had walked him through the locations we had found, read through the screenplay sitting on the floor of a dank, disused church in Harlem and finally he said ‘yes’."

I love the first half of this movie set in NYC - when they go to Louisiana it falls apart but all the stuff in NYC is note perfect including the way those "old" songs sound scratchy and creepy and how everything looks and seems washed out and grey. I actually think you could remake it - the book it's based on is a slim novel (Falling Angel) that ties together other elements not necessarily highlighted much in the film (World War II etc.) - I think the remake this year of Suspiria might have been better suited in a way to this story at least as a starting point to rewrite. I'm no fan of Rourke really but he's fine here even when the movie runs out of gas and De Niro gives a very surprising and quite good turn. Usually De Niro is a physical actor - he often doesn't handle lots of text well necessarily, but he does make you notice how inarticulate his characters sometimes are, and what they often can't say matters more to his characters......here however he makes every word count without saying much and he's holding back at the same time - he has odd line readings and sly theatrical acting choices really - pauses and "off" smiles and the effect is not only mysterious - he's mysterious right in front of your eyes with no film "trickery" creating it "for" him (at first). I'm not sure these 2 guys got along during this film but I could be wrong about that .......Rourke doesn't get along with a lot of people
