The Great is a genre bending, anti-historical ride through 18th Century Russia following the wildly comic rise of Catherine the Nothing to Catherine the Great. Elle stars as Catherine, while Nicholas will take on the role of Catherine’s husband Peter, the emperor of Russia. An Australian-British co-production, it is a passion project for Fanning. She will also serve as an executive producer. Will you watch? I'm getting Coppola's Marie Antoinette vibes from the synopsis.

Are there no other actresses? We are all Elle Fanning and she is us. All are Elle. All are Elle. It will never be your birthday again.

Are there no other actresses? I'm guessing we'll only see more of her - particularly now that she has the power to get projects off the ground. She pitched the show to Hulu.

I mean, never say never, but Elle is basically JLaw's casting in American Hustle over and over and over again.

From one of the screenwriters of The Favourite... Fanning and Hoult both look excellent here. I can't wait to watch!

Fanning seems perfect for period pieces.

Fanning seems perfect for period pieces. She is really growing into her looks, too - I thought she looked so beautiful in Maleficent 2. Fun trivia: Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette is her all time favorite film! bob-coppola https://www.instagram.com/p/BD_q-a-i2Ci

I'd forgotten all about this,it looks great. And yes,it does feel very similar to The Favourite, which is a huge plus.

After her stand-out, bubbly, and hilarious perf in Rainy Day in NY it occurred to me Fanning hasn't done much comedy but seems to have a real knack for it. That could make this whole thing worth seeing - and it looks well made production-wise, especially like the soft-focus visuals.

Pretty great actually. She's had a lot of practice will Maleficent I guess, but she's one of the few American actors who can truly nail an English accent.I haven't seen Ginger & Rosa but I thought she was fantastic in Somewhere and The Neon Demon. She was the best thing about A Rainy Day in New York too.

The historical Catherine did not (she was German), but Fanning and Hoult are both speaking in English accents in the trailer you posted.

That doesn't mean I approve of them having English accents. I posted a funny trailer of a show I'm curious about.

@tyler I love how Fanning is both a muse and a fan to Coppola She fits her style like a glove. I'm very excited for this! So eager to see if Tony McNamara's script can be as good as The Favourite's, and the idea of a Veep-ish period piece on Catherine the Great is too good to deny. It also doesn't hurt that Fanning and Hoult will be able to delve into their underrated comic timing.

Hm... Perhaps Fanning and Mirren will be competing for the Emmy for playing the same character! I wonder if that's ever happened before?
